This Thorn

A recent post by CG Thelen, from 140 Character Christian, entitled Humbled by Pain spoke of Paul’s thorn in the flesh (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). “Thorns can come in all sorts of things that cause us constant pain,” wrote CG

These words brought to mind a godly woman who once lived in my little town. She was twice widowed and confined to a wheelchair, yet had the sweetest Christian spirit. Most days she never ventured outside her home. But friends and neighbors lined up to see her or called her on the phone. People flocked to this dear sister because she had the “peace that passes all understanding” (Philippians 4:7).

Each of us can probably think of a fellow believer who trusted God despite challenging circumstances. This leads one to ponder the unshakeable faith found in God’s holiest servants.

What’s the secret?

I never asked Mrs. Frieda, but she surely would have pointed me to passages such as Colossians 3:1-3, about the life that is “hidden with Christ in God.” Or Psalm 91:1, where David rested in the “shadow of the Almighty.”

One of another friend’s favorite quips is, “Opinions are like belly buttons. Everybody has one and they’re all different.” It’s the same with thorns. And like Paul, any experience that draws us closer to God is a good thing.

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” – 2 Corinthians 12:8 (NIV)

Another favorite blogger, who speaks in power by God’s grace, is Ruth Kirk, of Seeking God’s Face Together. Her daily poems (complete with related scriptures) are like signposts along the narrow road to heaven. Please read her offerings. They are a blessing!

By God’s grace may we say in our weakness, “Lord, thank you for this thorn.”

Thank you, Deandra. I’m sorry it took me so long to approve your comment, and also to answer. I’ve been at school all day and don’t have the opportunity to do much with my blog from there.

There’s probably as many different thorns out there as there are people. But God knows how to help us with them all.

Thanks again for reading and commenting. I appreciate you! God Bless.

“Opinions are like belly buttons. Everybody has one and they’re all different” – this is so on point, David. No wonder we need His Truth in every aspect of our lives.

Thank you for adding your thoughts, brother. They are of great value to anyone who reads them, as they come directly from your walk with God. My prayer has been answered, as I hoped that you would comment here before lights out in Scotland. Blessings.

Thorns are a pain, that one thing is certain! But their function in the saints life is not about pain, but drawing the saint closer to God. Some of my sweetest moments of communion were encountered in a hospital bed over the years, and the memory lingers enriching me often in remembrance. I thank God often for these blessings thanks to my thorns.

That’s about how long it took me to hit my stride as a teacher too. My principal told me it would take three years, but I thought not. I crammed it into four. 😉

I just read your comment on tastybiteweb and could not agree more. The most important thing students need to know is that you love them. It is amazing how much better the classes are and how rewarding it is to both the student and the teacher.

It took me four years to learn how to teach.

True. Such an experience, like your pastor’s, isn’t something anyone would wish on themselves. Yet when it happens God provides. Thanks, Chris.

One of our pastors has been going through a thorny time over the last three years. I’ve watched him handle it with Grace and courage. When we talk about it, he continues to point to the all sufficient Grace that Paul experienced with his thorn in the flesh. I like to tell people that the deeper your thorn goes, the greater your ability to experience a depth of God’s Grace that most will never know.

Amen. Being on the prayerful, narrow path intuitively is the hallmark of many of God’s dearest friends.

I used one of your excellent pictures today from Unsplash. It’s over on my poetry site:

I understand all about thorns lol. I’ve had quite a few these past few years (or lifetime).
Yet, despite everything thrown my way, I never blamed God. In fact, the same day as the fire, God is good came into my mind. It was a poignant moment.
And then I see your post. Relevant as always.

I have found life in general to be thorny and have spent much time trying to cover them so they are comfortable. I’ve often pondered “resting in the shadow of the almighty” That implicit trust that automatically prays without ceasing and not even realizing intuitively walking the narrow paths upwards.

I often at dinnertime I would ask my boys what their rose was for the day and then their thorn. The goal was to see if we could tie them together some how. Always a lesson, right? I would tie in some insight that would highlight what God was teaching them in both examples. God is continually molding us. Great post David 😇💛🙌

Thanks, Betty. You’ve made a good point, as usual. 😇 Mrs. Frieda probably didn’t realize how much her faith and approach to life influenced people. Blessings to you and Dan.

Mrs. Frieda is a reminder that while we may not realize it or even consider it, others are watching us. Others see how we live our lives, and we are an example. Hopefully, we are a witness for Christ as well as our faith as we live each day.
