I once heard of a small business who chooses its employee of the month 30 days in advance. And for *Mrs. Clarice, the owner, it’s purposefully random. She draws the name out of a hat at the first weekly team meeting of the month, and no employee gets chosen twice until everyone has a turn.
“But what if the person whose name you draw doesn’t deserve to be employee of the month?” asked a puzzled television news reporter. “Every single one of them has always lived up to the honor,” said Clarice with a wink. “I have faith in my people.”
God does that. He puts faith in His people and entrusts them with things —BIG things. Like when He told Abram, “To your descendants I will give this land.” – Genesis 12:7 (NIV)
He also restores and recalibrates people to their REAL life mission. Think Moses or Paul. You probably know all the Bible stories, so I won’t write a Sunday School lesson, but I do have a question:
With what has God entrusted you?
Here’s a brief story of my time as heaven’s employee of the month.
The evening before I assumed a key leadership position in my church, I fell asleep worried if I was up to the task. Later, I had a vivid dream.
As I walked through a crowded congregation, Brother Bob–a pastor from my youth–came up to me carrying a large ring of keys. As he pressed them into my hand he said, “Here you go. Now, take care of things.”
Of course, I spent most of my devotional time the next morning thinking about the dream! It really felt like God was sending me a message. But what?
Bro. Bob handed me KEYS. That must mean something!
I immediately thought of Peter’s confession of Christ in Matthew 16. Jesus told him, “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” – Matthew 16:19 (NIV)
Now I understood! Bro. Bob–a much loved mentor from my youth–represented God. And by handing me the keys, He was saying, “I am empowering you to do this job. I have faith in you.”
I served in that church leadership position for two years. At times it was certainly a stretch (for me personally), but I never forgot about the proverbial keys in my pocket.
With God’s help, I lived up to the honor.
Now back to the question:
With what has God entrusted you?
“For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 1:6 (NIV)
*Mrs. Clarice, her company and the inquisitive reporter came out of my overactive imagination. But isn’t it a neat idea?! 😊

Yes, each of us can make a contribution to the kingdom of God. I often fantasize about being a leader in the style of the apostle Paul, but God made me a Barnabas. The truth is, by God’s grace, we can lead from anywhere! Blessings.

God trusted us when we were not deserving. He love us even if we are not worthy of loving. These acts of complete faith in us open our hearts to be better and try harder to be worthy of God’s love and trust. It is that very generous act of love and faith that allowed us to do the same to the people around us despite of the times we got hurt. God is our light so powerful we are able to share that light to others. Take care my friend. 🙏

Years ago I became chair of our church elder board — a position I did not feel qualified for, but they “handed me the keys.” A few months later our pastor told me he was resigning his position to care for his ailing father in another state. The elder board ended up running things for almost a year until a new pastor came onboard. I remember the departing pastor telling the elder board, “You have been appointed for such a time as this.” It was a year that stretched us all and the entire church grew in faith and numbers. I praise God that he sees us as worthy of his call, even when we don’t feel it.

This is a post that makes me pause, checking if I am taking care with what I have been entrusted by God. Could I do a better job to serve Him? If we do stuff well for family or employers surely the Creator of the Universe and Saviour of our soul deserves better from us. Thank you for this brother.

David, this is a post that causes me to stop and ponder. How amazing that each one of us is given the keys to the Kingdom of God. He does make us his sons and honors us. He trusts us and is sure we will fulfill the great plans he placed inside of each one of us. He knows our name and cheers us on!

I love this story and you chose some great examples with Moses and Paul. I love that our scriptures are full of ordinary people doing extraordinary things because of our mighty God.

This post makes me think of how children are entrusted to their parents – and how children live up to their parents expectations. Perhaps all those in our lives are entrusted to us, and so we need to look for the best in them and to treat them as we should. I don’t have one big “what I am entrusted with” answer, but each day, each person, is an opportunity to glorify God. Enjoy your Sunday, David.

I relate to this one in many ways—the dream and the interpretation—it reminds me of an upcoming post. And then Mrs. Clarice. I used to give “student of the week” awards. I watched for them to do something worthy of mention, and at some point, they each did.

To disciple Christians while teaching them to learn how to study God’s word for themselves and understand, it through Inductive Bible Study. I love it. It is my passion besides God Himself, of course! When we are born again God gives us spiritual gifts to be used to strengthen the body of Christ. Using these gifts becomes our purpose and passion.
That is a little more than you asked for. Isn’t it!

This is so powerful David, yes God has created each one of us with special and unique gifts to be shared with others. This reminds me of the Starfish award I received when I was working for a nonprofit supporting and teaching children and adults with wide ranging challenges and special needs. The staff and community wanted to honor me with the best friend award for my compassion and ability to listen to others, to be a friend. I was and still am humbled by this recognition. I still have the award to remind me to always be kind to others, we are all battling something and with God’s love, we can conquer anything! Blessings to you David, enjoy your Sunday 😊

At our local small hospital, there was a beautiful plaque on the wall, announcing ‘Employee of the Month’
What a great motivator, I thought !
However, the last person on the plaque was honoured in May, 2013 !
I talked to the hospital administrator and pointed out that the outdated plaque did nothing to inspire the public’s confidence ! They decided to remove the plaque. 🤗
