Lint Trap

Our dryer was on its last leg. Clothes were taking three cycles to get dry, and the tired old thing was leaving puddles of water on the floor. One day, while it was running, it smelled like something electrical burning.

Time for a new dryer.

We found a nice model, at a local big box store, brought it home and sat the old one out by the curb.

I was all set to install the new dryer, when my friend (an appliance repair man) cautioned, “It sounds like your exhaust vent is clogged.” Why didn’t I talk to him first?!

In short order I was up on our roof with a leaf blower to test the “Maytag Man’s” hypothesis. I took the cap off the exhaust vent and blasted air downward. My wife sat below with a plastic bag over the opening. Nothing. It didn’t move an inch.

A simple test with a weight tied to a rope revealed the clog was about 10 feet down the pipe. But how could I clear the obstruction? Two pieces of 8′ baseboard taped together did the trick. A gentle push from my end deposited a huge ball of gray sludge at the bottom. A final leaf blower test revealed the vent was clear!

Our new dryer works like a champ!

Please allow me to speak frankly about my own clogged up life. Perhaps you can identify?

Lately, I’ve been increasingly obsessed with engaging with others on social media. Occasionally liking and commenting on other’s posts has turned into an every-waking-moment marathon. And on the days I post I’m like a casino gambler who refuses to leave their favorite slot machine. Adult diaper, anyone?

Friends, in my off-line life I’m taking three cycles to get things dry. Melancholy puddles form under me every time I stop scrolling. In short, I’m melting. The “exhaust vent” of my psyche is clogged with digital sludge.

Kind reader, I sincerely enjoy engaging with you and other fine Christian bloggers here on WP.  Thank you for reading and commenting on my thoughts. It’s been a blessing for me to read and comment on yours.

But I must take a step back.

I’ll continue to post, but with commenting turned off–for the time being. Rest assured, I’ll still read and enjoy your offerings, but may not like and comment with the frequency I did in the past.

Thank you for your understanding and prayers, as I unclog my life.

🙏❤️ prayers and love. David

Oh, the things we allow to clog our lives. Why do we live with them when they could easily be removed by prayer & obedience?

I think we all come to this place at some point in time where we need to step back and unclog our lives. I totally understand and I haven’t been blogging or doing all of the social media “stuff” that most have for very long. Glad to know you will still post as you have wise words of wisdom when you share. Case in point…”Lint Trap”. Thanks for being transparent and sharing. God bless.

Thank you, Chris. I’m glad you offered some words of encouragement and wisdom. You are pretty good in that department!

I’m still writing, but also working on filling that cup.

    I appreciate you!

Glad I saw this. I wondered what had happened to you. Sounds like you’re using a great bit of wisdom. If you’re not constantly filling up your cup, and you’re constantly pouring out, it won’t take long until you’re dry.

I understand. Social media can become almost addictive. Sometimes we need a “course correction”. I’m praying that as you step back, God draws you closer.

An observation of what is coming up is always helpful, a non judgemental view, in order to make the best decision for your highest good moving forward. I ask myself, what’s the most loving response I can have now and go with that choice. When we look at things in this vein, we always make the correct choice for ourselves.

You gotta do what you gotta do. I can relate to this, but it’s the opposite for me. I’m still struggling to read and comment. Still want to stand back from the crowd more than engage. Guess we all have our challenges and struggles. Good on you for taking measures to curb an vicious wash cycle. 😄 I think I’m caught in the tumble dry cycle. I’m being bounced around and I can’t figure out how to get out. Trying to wait patiently for God to open the door and fold me… 🤣😂🤣 Well, thanks for getting me smiling. Needed that.

I can completely relate to what you say so well here David. Personally I also have been taking a bit of a step back from social media. Facebook etc only get a cursory glance once a day to answer direct contacts. I even had a cull of blogs I was reading/following recently. Your timing is perfect brother, this has been the third time I have seen this topic disussed today. I have come to the conclusion that there are too many distractions from prayer and reading the Word of God, social media can easily be satan’s opioid dulling our spiritual senses. Thus, brother I am proud of how you have stepped up and took a stand. I pray that as you declog that His Spirit will fill you up with His blessingx and the Word of God.

This was so spot on to my situation! I’m about to deactivate my social media for a while! I don’t understand the draw or addiction, but deactivating it takes away the temptation to check knowing nobody can contact me (even though they weren’t going to in the first place!).

Thank you for your authenticity. Thank you for allowing the spirit of the Living God to guide and direct you in all areas and doing so by publicly shining as an example for others. Blessings to you as you reengage with those off-line people.

Good for you David. If you were closer we would go fishing now and then. There is No signal on our little lake to even use a phone. Well it’s snowing right now so maybe tomorrow I will go fishing?? I might go in search of icicle pictures later (well after I get over my cold).

My friend, I truly understand and respect your decision to step back to heal, catch up on yourself and the responsibilities of work and life. We all are like the once efficient waking machine, working tirelessly one heavy load of dirty clothes after the other. We even function the equivalent of 2 or more machines, multi-tasking so everyone can happily have their clean clothes on time. No matter how many times we do our self maintainance , it will reach a breaking point and it needs a brand new one. Stepping back, being off the grid, detaching from other things no matter how much we enjoy them is the only way to find our best, happiest, most efficient selves. You have a generous, kind heart, now that heart needs it’s caring and nurturing too. God bless you always and all that you do. Take care of yourself always. 🙏

You are not alone my friend. Take time, unclog and then you’ll know the right thing to do. I have tightened my circle of interaction to just a few for the exact same reason. Blessings as you clean out the mental and spiritual vent.
