A Good Strategy for Healthy Living

I was on a flight this past week and started exploring the seat back pocket in front of me. Yeah, I’m THAT kind of guy. I inspected the folding laminated card—the one with all the pictures of the plane—just in case something changed. Who knows, maybe they added what to do if a UFO pulls up alongside while we’re in flight?🛸👽

Anyhow, it was the barf bag that really got me thinking. On one side it said, “Baby Care,” to dispose of a dirty diaper. And on the other side it said, “Feel Better,” you know after you’ve tossed your cookies—because the aliens did a fly by?🤢

As I flipped the bag back and forth, I realized the two phrases make a good strategy for healthy living. What is Baby Care? It’s allowing yourself the basic things needed to restore comfort. We don’t judge babies for being babies; we take care of them. Translation: listen to your body, mind, and emotions. If you need a break, take a break.

Then, because so many people were coming and going that they (the disciples) did not even have a chance to eat, He (Jesus) said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

Mark 6:31 (NIV)

When you do better you feel better. Jesus said so Himself! So what is Feel Better about? It means taking care of yourself isn’t a crime. Kind reader, if you’re having a hard time today Christ understands. After all, He was a very busy guy. Yet he told his friends, “Let’s go somewhere quiet and relax.”

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Jesus, Matthew 11:28 (NIV)

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

I suppose it was a little awkward, me taking pics of the motion sickness bag on a flight. However, when inspiration struck I had no choice. I NEEDED those pics!🤣 Thanks for reading and commenting!

Thanks for the reminder. Sadly, I think we’re so busy we forget the value of rest. If I was sitting next to you, I would have definitely had to ask about the pics.

The perfect read to begin my day. People nowadays tend to react negatively to stress and problems with actions that lead to more sadness, anger, pain when all they have to do is ask God for healing and help , and to just focus for a moment loving self with self care. People are going through a lot this year, finding their healer is most important. Thank you my Friend. Sometimes it’s easy to just give up, then God finds a way for us to feel hopeful again.

Hi David, this post brought a smile to my face. First, the analogy is brilliant but so true! And second, seems the Holy Spirit is speaking the same thing to a lot of us. (read this today AFTER posting my blog yesterday). Bless you!

and yes, i certainly agree, that self care is something we so often forget, especially in our efforts to serve others.

but the first rule of first aid, is to take care of yourself or we won’t be able to help others – Jesus practiced this often with time alone with His Heavenly Father…a good model for us to copy!

True, Deborah. We are body, soul, and spirit. If any one of these is out of whack—I love those three words… rolls off the tongue—the others suffer. As a certified “little people person” I know you’ve seen what a cranky pre-k student is capable of! I enjoy your input. Thank you for dropping in! Blessings.

Thanks for letting me know what’s in the seatbacks of the plane! Once I find my seat and sit down, I am usually out like a light and don’t wake up until landing! Makes for a short flight! I agree taking care of ourselves is important physically and spiritually! When either one is out of whack, the other seems to suffer along, too.

Great post. Nice reminder, David. Keep searching through the backs of seats. 😁 You just never know what treasures you’ll find. When life throws you barf bags duck for cover. Ending up in the kneeling goes a long way. Try not to kick anyone’s seat. 😳

How funny! The guys on my dorm hallway at seminary did something similar. We challenged each other to share the gospel while referencing random objects—an ink pen, a rubber ball, and a plastic cup, etc. The person who could best tie the items together, while also sharing the Good News, won. Come to think of it, I did come out on top quite a bit. But my buddy Art was the BOSS!

Such an important reminder David. Thank you! In my college group, were several young men who were headed on to seminary after graduation. For fun, they would name an item and challenge another to make it into an object lesson. I think you would have been the leader of the pack in that group.

You guys are funny with all the talk about the barf bag. But I appreciate the reminder that we need to take care of our bodies. Our bodies are a temple for the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). So that alone should be a reminder to us. But sadly we don’t always do what we need to do. We just keep pushing ourselves to get more done. So I thank you for sharing this insight!

It is all too easy in our frantic world to forget sometimes we just need to rest, physically and spiritually. As you point out so well, if our Lord needed rest occasionally it must make sense for us too.

Thank you. My wife and I say Psalm 23 together every evening before we go to sleep. We started this when COVID-19 hit and haven’t stopped. Of course, you are right. Sometimes, we must be willing to accept help—from God and others—in order to truly rest, heal, and reboot for healthy living. Blessings!

You’re right about cultural expectations, Manu. Especially here in the US, it’s almost commendable to work yourself down to the bone. However, a little rest can work wonders. All is well on my end. Thank you for asking! There’s a long road ahead for my son, but at least he is back at home. Blessings!

Yes, we do need to go somewhere and relax. We do need to invest in self-care. We are human, not God, and our resources are limited.
One of my favourite Bible verses is “He restores my soul”. However, in order for God to restore our soul, we need to choose to withdraw from the world, and choose to be alone with Him. We invest in self-care, and allow Him to care for us – by renewing our strength and restoring our soul.

A good reminder to listen to our body and minds and take rest on a regular basis. Culture credits being busy but God intends for us to work hard but also rest.
Hoping all is well at your end.

I do think as a society, we have lost the sentiment of resting on Sunday. And if you think about it, one day of rest during the week is a prescription for healthy living. It is funny thinking of you taking a picture of the bag. If the woman had noticed it, you could have said, “I am a blogger.” If that doesn’t get you a new follower, I don’t know what would! Enjoy your Saturday!
