Wakey Wake, Cupcake

It used to annoy me when my laptop kept telling me it needed a software update or virus scan or some other preventative maintenance. Ask me later, I clicked on the screen: “Can’t you see I’m busy?”

But then, the inevitable happened. I got a computer virus that wiped out my entire hard drive. Important documents and hundreds of pictures, which I’d failed to back up, vanished in an instant.

Needless to say, I now keep my computer healthy with regular updates and scans.

The unexamined life is not worth living.

Socrates

Our wise friend from ancient Greece challenges us to scan our lives for purpose and meaning, or risk losing everything. But King David of ancient Israel has a better idea: ask God to do it.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)

After all, heart surgery is best left to the professional.

Kind reader, like me, are you sometimes too busy for a life scan? Well, let’s not do that anymore. Agreed?

A closing haiku:

Do not say, “I can’t”

When you really mean, “I won’t”

Wakey wake, cupcake.

Regular David (me)

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️

You’re welcome, brother. I’d like to think I’m a man of great faith. Sometimes I am, but other times not so much. This shows that the power is in God, not me. God’s best to you.

    Do not say, “I can’t”

When you really mean, “I won’t”. As always , your words speaks of light and wisdom that only comes from a great Man of Faith. And yes, I definitely need life scanning. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Tina. It seemed to me like you knew where you were going with your comment–until you said you didn’t😀. ‘parboiled poetry,’ Yes, to this I can relate. I have a few little gems that are so parboiled I dare not share them–for fear of losing followers.😇. I appreciate your stopping by. God Bless!

Wakey wake cupcake makes me giggle. That’s like one of my ‘parboiled poetry’ posts. Yes, humor and amusement is sometimes necessary when giving a right good kick in the pants. 😂🤣😂🤣 It’s softer on the backside.

Good reminder. That verse about searching our hearts has slipped my mind… or maybe it escapee my heart. Or maybe my heart and mind took a vacation. Maybe they ran away. Okay maybe I took flight … either way. I guess I have been afraid to ask God to search my heart. Silly, since He already knows what’s there and why. *deep sigh* I’m tired… tired and worn down. Sorry, I have no idea where I’m going with this. But that verse will stick with me… now I just need to learn to apply it.

I once left a 1TB hard drive removable hard drive in an old laptop case I threw away. I’m still not sure what all I had on there! I’ve pushed past the warnings before, too, Beth. God is so gracious, but I don’t always get the message-at least right away. Thanks for stopping by. God Bless!

I just had the memory card on my phone go bad. The worse part is that I knew something was amiss but I kept taking pictures that saved to that card anyway. How often do I know I need a “God scan” but push past the Holy Spirit’s warning messages and regret not stopping for the scan when the malfunction happens and a mess has to be fixed.

That’s why this post was so good, it reminded all of us to stop and think about the other things we were not attending to! Ooops, gotta go, the Holy Spirit is telling me I have an update to do!

God’s life scans aren’t always the most welcome idea to me, but they are necessary. David’s boldness in praying, “Lord, search my heart” is inspiring. I appreciate your thoughts, Andy B2. 😊

My computer has been popping up anti virus updates for a while, thanks for this reminder to stop hitting “Ask me later!” A great analogy that having that same response to God can also cause unhealthy outcomes!

This is my prayer, as well, brother. This side of heaven, we will never “arrive” at sinless perfection. 1 John 1:9 = lather, rinse, repeat. Thanks for stopping by my wee blog.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The willingness to ask Father God to search us is a real bravery test in our walk with Him. May I always seek Him and His scrutiny in all things. Thank you David, God bless you brother.

I think computer updates are annoying, too, but necessary! Even though this is a repost, it bears being repeated! I see you’ve started school. We hit the floor running Monday and students arrive Wednesday! Let the good times roll😵‍💫

It makes sense that you’re diligent about something like this. It was a shocker for me, no doubt. But it made me stop and think about other things in life I wasn’t properly attending to. Thanks for sharing. God Bless!

It only takes one time. And with handling my clients sensitive data, I am anal about backing up. I have two large capacity flash sticks, so I have a redundant backup. I also bring the flash sticks home with me, so in case the office building burns up, I still have the data. I also have a wonderful woman who has amazing knowledge about computers who does a “clean up” on my laptop twice a year. So now, based on your post, I will start doing this purposefully in my spiritual life. Bless you for this post!

I can imagine the looks on those young faces when you rated yourself half what they did. It’s like the study where 75% of a college class rated themselves above average. Not likely.

That would be very hard David. I have only lost photos so far. You are so right about having God do the scans. I once asked a small group of teenagers on a scale of 1-10 (as a discussion starter), 1 being the worst, rate your relationship and closeness to God. They were all above 8 in their mind. I told them I was a 4 and then we really had a rousing discussion about how rating yourself and believing your rating is a really bad idea. I used current events and decision making based on what people think is right in their eyes and then the bible (lots of people die every day thinking they are going to heaven…a good time to ask God as he gets the only vote).

My reactions to updates are generally the same. There’s never a convenient time to update and restart my computer or ipad. Thanks for the reminder that the regular virus checks and ‘updates’ on the condition of our heart can also safe us from catastrophe! This hits home.

Such a good reminder David to have our heart checks with God so that we can be made aware of any viruses that can corrupt. I could relate to clicking on the remind me later button but like you experienced those can be dangerous.

I’m so sorry about those photos and writings.

It’s been a few years now, but we have cloud storage as well as a spare PC which downloads everything from the cloud storage so we have two backups of everything

We nearly lost all our files when a hard drive started to fail, many years ago

That’s a great way to put it, Pastor Pete—“fleeing the operating table.” I keep thinking, “Surely I’ve learned enough about this.” But God doesn’t think so. Blessings!

I have found that God sometimes does His heart surgery in me during a crisis. The tough part is allowing His word to cut deep down to my motives, when I would really just love to flee the operating table!
