The Lord is My Shepherd–Kinda Sorta

If the Lord is our Shepherd, we should follow Him closely. This is my summary of a recent post by Bridget Thomas entitled, “Following the Shepherd’s Lead.”

My blogger friend was on to something. I sheepishly 😄 admitted I’ve tried to be friends with God before without following Him.

Yes, this sounds preposterous, but it happens all the time.

For instance, I know folks who are serious social media lurkers. They’re active on major platforms but never engage, choosing instead to scroll and troll through the content feeds of others.

Bridget’s post reminded me–Ok, convicted😞–I’ve done the same thing with God. I’ve claimed to be His “follower,” yet not fellowshipped with Him at all. I wanted Him around, simply for His content feed. “Don’t like. Don’t comment.” was my motto.

Thankfully, I was still able to hear His voice–calling me back to the fold. And this reminded me who my true shepherd is.

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me.

Kind reader, the Good Shepherd (Jesus) seeks us out before we even realize we need Him. To know Him is to follow Him, and vice-versa. Do you hear His voice today?

I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me.

    Thank you, Rainer. Taking up our cross on His terms is an ongoing challenge, indeed. The winter weather impacted us but not to the degree it did down your way. My brother lives in the Austin area; they were also iced in—like Big D.

    Thankfully Jesus seeks us before we even know we need Him—amen! Thank you for this reminder David. I think submitting our lives fully to Him on His terms rather than ours can be challenging for many of us. We want the friend apart from the Father. Good post!     The same happens with me, Matt. I sometimes let busyness, or something that’s bothering me , pull me away from the Good Shepherd. But He is faithful to patiently call me back. Blessings, Bro. How was your snow day?

    It’s scarcely believable: God–the almighty King of the universe–WANTS to be in relationship with each of us. He DESIRES honest communication from the depths of our hearts. He LONGS to bestow his perfect wisdom, guidance, strength, support and more to all who come to him. And yet we all from time to time say, “No thank you! I’d rather do this my way, on my own.” How foolish we can be!! I praise you, Father, for loving us through our stubbornness, for never giving up on us!

    The Good Shepherd never stops seeking His sheep. We have feet of clay, but God is always faithful and true Thank you for reading and commenting, Lesley. I asked myself earlier today, “Are you practicing what you preach?” The thought came to me that it’s the heart that God looks for—the “want to” behind our actions. God Bless.

    I echo so many of these comments David. I’m just so glad I found a relationship with God early in life. It was such a revelation to me as a teen even though I was raised on knowing what God’s word said. “You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!” (Jesus) John 5:39

    I know someone who said this! He said he was a Christian, then came out and said he had never actually asked Jesus to be his savior, he just wanted a friend. Blew my mind!

    Excellent post. I learned a long time ago that not listening to that still small voice gets me in trouble. I am so thankful Jesus is always there watching over me and gets me back on the Lord’s path and off mine. He has has his hands full with me for sure. 🙂

    I was talking to my son this week about this. I was sharing the difference between knowing about God and knowing Him. We can know about Him from reading the Bible and listening to preachers. But He didn’t ask us to know about Him. We need to know Him and be known. We only get that by spending time in prayer and sitting at His feet.

    This is a really thought-provoking post. I had never really thought about how being a friend of God (or perhaps wanting Him to listen to me, and be there for me, and answer my prayers) required me to follow him first. Otherwise, it is using God; it not relational. And we’ve likely all had narcissistic friends who dumped on us, and talked about themselves all the time, but had no real interest in us and our lives. How did that leave us feeling? We didn’t feel like we were in a real relationship. Thanks for the challenge, David!

    Well said, David. I have been there before too. There was a time in my life when I would have told you I was a Christian, but looking back I can see I was far from God. I am so thankful our Shepherd loves us enough to go after us and lead us back home. 🐑

    I’m thinking that being a spiritual troll can be a dangerous pursuit because if we’re not committed to our Creator we may follow the wrong path and end up in a dark place with no idea how we got there 🤔
