Oh Happy Day!

Twice in one day this week, I saw the same message: “It is what it is.” The first time was on a bumper sticker–coming through the morning car line at my school. Then, it was after dismissal –on a custodian’s tee shirt.

Now, I’m the kind of guy who goes fishing for a life application when I intercept the same message twice in eight hours. And I’m angling for positive thoughts from a Christian perspective.

My first idea was the contrast between the current prevailing worldview and a “Not of this world” one.” For the Christian, it isn’t what it is. Rather, it is what it’s going to be.😇 Our hope for the future is sure–no matter what happens on planet earth!

In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade, kept in heaven for you.

1 Peter 1:4 (NIV)

Kind reader, this scripture led me straight to my post title. When my cheerful grandmother got excited about a piece of good news she’d put her weathered hands together, look to heaven, and say “Oh Happy Day!”

The Lord is our strength and song!

For All Time – Psalm 42:8; 113:204; 118:14

Thank you for reading and watching. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

I have been trying to think of lyrics to send you so you could make a song with the tune of Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel but the song would start with Hello Coffee My Old Friend 🙂

Your playing and singing on this reminds me of Andrew Peterson especially on Invisible God. I’d post a link but have found they won’t work in the comments.

Thanks, Pete! I try to keep a moving bass line going—in the guitar accompaniment. We are off from school today, but back tomorrow!

Thank you for your lovely encouragement David, this subject certainly will preach, obviously with a big hand from the Holy Spirit.
Yes, I preached at our church in Glenrothes last week, the Mustard Seed Fellowship. I felt it went well, I felt the Spirit guiding me and giving me courage. The feedback I have had from many lovely folks has been very encouraging. You can see it on YouTube here https://youtu.be/WDoI5_z6Gsk

This is precisely what came to mind: though realistic (in worldly terms) “It is what it is” doesn’t necessarily take into account the hope we have in Christ. Brother, this stuff will preach!

How did your sermon go last week? As I recall, you were set to preach somewhere?
Thanks for sharing, brother! God Bless!

Understood, Crystal. And I don’t knock (or disagree ) with this interpretation. For some reason my mind just went to the hope Christians have in the Lord.

To me, “It is what it is” is about coming to an acceptance of whatever “it” is, like the first part of “Let go and let God.” Thanks for sharing your strength (and your song), David!

Thank you, Simply B. Accepting reality has its place, but, as Don’t Lose Hope commented, we often don’t see God’s reality until after the fact. Maybe we should call this “excepting” reality? We know what we see—except for what we can’t see, at the moment.
    God’s best to you.

“For the Christian, it isn’t what it is. Rather, it is what it’s going to be.” I can’t think of a more encouraging collection of words than what you’ve written today. The “it is what it is” always kind of grates on my thinking. Thank you for this post, and the lovely song.

Nice picking and singing David. I have oft thought that God may well say “it is what it is” to some who have mocked him with their lives. We do well to pay attention to the psalmist words and songs and even better when we hear the words “well done”
