Not So Sticky Notes

One day last week after school I found a sticky note on the driver’s side window of my minivan:

“Thank you for all your hard work.” Love, Admin.

“How thoughtful, an atta boy just for me; our principal must have noticed the extra work I did with our traveling music group.” I felt seen. Encouraged.

The next day, I received a follow-up email from her with the subject “sticky note”

Every single car in the parking lot was tagged with a sticky note; however, that Oklahoma wind outsmarted me. If the wind blew yours away and you would like another one, please respond to this email.

Love, Admin

Suddenly, I felt deflated. “Everyone got a note; it wasn’t just for me. Maybe admin doesn’t realize I went the extra mile after all.”

On second thought, it didn’t matter. My boss took the time to show she cared by tagging every vehicle in our huge parking area with an encouraging thought.

I suspect this sometimes happens with people and God. He puts an encouraging message on every life in the “parking lot,” but the world blows many of them away.

We don’t get the message.

Yet the Bible, the Holy Spirit, and other believers are there to give us another “sticky note” when we respond to their follow up email.

Kind reader, you didn’t ask, but here’s a positive thought—just for you:

God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.

Hebrews 6:10 (NIV)

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️Prayers and love.

Well said, Nancy! We can’t overdo praise and encouragement—so long as it’s specific and sincere. Thank you for encouraging me! God Bless.

It’s easy to forget how powerful an encouraging word can be. We need to be God’s hands and feet and pass out individual, specific “sticky notes” every chance we get! An extra delight? The givers are even more blessed (with joy and satisfaction) than the receivers!

Now I have the old Second Chapter of Acts song Which Way The Wind Blows in my mind 🙂

I thought of that, too. Praise needs to be specific to be most effective. Otherwise, it’s just generic platitudes. Thankfully, I know my principal’s heart was in the right place.

I’ve read that, so long as praise is specific and sincere, there can’t be too much it. What a boost we can give others!

Thanks for sharing, and God’s best to you!

I would have felt deflated too. You feel you haven’t been actually noticed if the appreciation is general. I’m so glad God notices us individually, and relates to us individually.

Seriously, there’s often plenty of encouraging things going on, we just need to look for them.

David, thank you for the positive thought that was just for me. Now, why do you think all these other people read it, too? Just kidding. Isn’t it wonderful to know God will not forget our “work and love…”? I always appreciate your uplifting messages. If I could, I’d leave a sticky note on your car thanking you.

Wow David, a powerful message came from that post-it note experience. Makes me think that when the winds of the world are blowing strongest, I need to keep the eyes of my heart open widest so I can grab hold of the message the Lord is leaving before it gets snatched away.

Great illustration David. Our spring winds will remind me of this as I’m out and about in the woods a lot lately. One could write an allegory-short story-children’s book on this concept (or adult).

I Love this. I bet you’re right – God does leave us “sticky notes” quite often. But the winds of regret, or distraction, or a million other possibilities blow them away. Thank you for the “follow-up email,” David! I’m going to keep my eyes open for those sticky notes and those emails 😁
