The elementary school building where I work is loaded with SMART technology. For instance, the lights in almost every room are activated when they sense motion. After a period of inactivity, they turn themselves off. The outside doors have no keys; your teacher ID badge unlocks them when you hold it up to a reader.
A few of our summer school teachers are from other schools, and as a lead teacher it’s my job to get them building access. So I notified the district and asked them to program the new teacher fobs to open our doors. I received an email later that day saying everyone was good to go.
But they really weren’t. One of the new teachers tested her fob. The pad beeped, but the locks didn’t disengage. I contacted the district tech people and they promised to look into the problem ASAP. A short time later I received another email.
“The building access control system was down. The doors only recognized the IDs authorized before that time. System has been reset and is back online. The new teachers should have access.”
I know it worked, because people stopped texting me to come let them in!
This kind of thing happens in a Christian’s walk with God as well. Our spiritual system goes offline and we’re stuck remembering only what God said and did before that. The little circle icon spins and spins and a message pops up: _____ is not responding.
Here’s one of my favorite “offline, to back online” scriptures:
- system is down
“Do not call to mind the former things, or consider things of the past.” — Isaiah 43:18 (NIV)
- system is back online
“Behold, I am going to do something new, now it is springing up; Will you not be aware of it? I will make a roadway in the wilderness, rivers in the desert.” — Isaiah 43:19 (NIV)
Think with me for a moment how this happens in the Bible:
Noah and the Ark: reset needed. Start building an ark.
Abram: life reboot. Leave your home and travel to a place God shows you. Oh, and your new name is Abraham.
Christ’s twelve disciples (plus Paul): total system restart. A new life with a new purpose.
There WILL be resets and reboots in our walk with God. Are we ready? It’s good to remember God’s last instructions. But it’s GREAT to pray, “Lord, what’s next?!”
The Journey
Set sail from the shore-with my back to the wind.
Let go of the wheel; put it all in God’s hands.
And drift with the current awhile.
