Ebony and Ivory

Two little girls, of two different races, walking down the hall holding hands, that’s what I saw one morning. As I passed them, one told me (with genuine joy), “This is my sister!”

Young children are many things, but they aren’t naturally biased.

Can we all get along?

The apostle Paul thought so. “The entire law is summed up in a single command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ — Galatians 5:14 (NIV). He then warned the church at Galatia that if they kept “biting and devouring” each other, they would destroy each other.

Next, he offers the solution: “So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.” — Galatians 5:16

Only through the power of the supernatural, by God’s grace, can we love others as well as we love ourselves.

๐Ÿ™ Heavenly Father: please help us to be like those two little girls, today and every day. For, as the song says, ๐ŸŽถ”They’ll know we are Christians by our love.”๐ŸŽถ AMEN

    Sadly, this is true, Dawn. But Godโ€™s love is stronger. Even if we start with you and me, itโ€™s a beginning. โ€œHate canโ€™t drive out hate, only love can do that.โ€ Martin Luther King, Jr.
    But I do not know what itโ€™s like to live in this country as a racial minority. Thanks for your thoughts!

    Children are innocent. Too bad they often end up wrongly influenced by adults who donโ€™t have the love of Jesus in their hearts.

    My favorite song from South Pacific is “I’m gonna wash that man right out of my hair!” Being married for 41 years I sometimes feel like singing that, but my restraint holds me back!

    My mother likes musicals, so one day when “South Pacific” was on tv, we watched it. I didn’t come from a family free of racial prejudice, sad to say. I guess that is why “South Pacific” affected me so much. It gave a lesson within the framework of the story. I like to think that it is one of the things God used to help me.

    Iโ€™ve heard of South Pacfic, but have never seen the whole thing. In an early draft of this post I included the thought that bigotry must be taught. But before I hit publish I decided to leave it out. It almost goes without saying that racial prejudice (or any other kind of prejudice) is a learned behavior. I am grateful for your input!     Your post reminded me of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “South Pacific”, in which there are two inter-racial relationships. In one, Marine Lt. Cable falls in love with a Tonkinese woman, but realizes his family would never accept her because she is not white. The song “You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught”, which he sings, explains prejudice better than anything I’ve heard since. To me, “South Pacific”, (in 1958, I believe) struck a much-needed blow against prejudice.
