Is Hope a Sustainable Strategy?

The pint-sized kindergartener kept heaving the full-size basketball upward towards the goal. The rim was set to seven feet high, but the little girl is only half that tall. Yet there she was, trying over and over to reach the basket.

My wife walked by at some point, unaware just how long the tenacious child had been at it.

Mrs. Duncan: โ€œDid you make a basket?โ€

Kindergartener: โ€œNot yet.โ€

Itโ€™s uncommonโ€”especially post pandemicโ€”to find a six-year-old who doesnโ€™t cave under pressure. But this tireless wee lassie๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ was undeterred. Sheโ€™s living proof that hope is indeed a sustainable strategy.

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

Romans 12:12 (NIV)

I love how the Apostle Peter puts it: โ€œGod has given us new birth into a living hope, through the resurrection of Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fadeโ€”kept in heaven for you.โ€  1 Peter 1:3b-4 (NIV)

Kind reader, if weโ€™ve totally entrusted our souls to Christ, eternal victory is certain. As a sales manager of mine used to say, โ€œA shot on goal is never a bad play.โ€

So, let’s keep shooting.

Thank you for reading. ๐Ÿ™โค๏ธ Prayers and love.

For in this hope we are saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

Romans 8:24-25 (NIV)

When Nancy told me about the young oneโ€™s tenacity, we both knew it was blog worthy. Praise God, our redeemer is in the hope businessโ€”the eternal variety. Thank you, Beth. God Bless!

We have the chorus of voices as Hebrews 12:1 tells us who are cheering us on so let us not lose hope as we fix our eyes on Jesus

Thank you, Deborah. Eternal hope is indeed encapsulated in a Jesus Christ. The world has a somewhat different view, however. A check at thesarus.com lists “pipe-dream” and “castles in the air” as synonyms for hope. I’m so glad our faith in God isn’t just wishful thinking. Thank you for stopping by my little blog. God Bless!

Wonderful story, David. I just read somewhere, or heard someone say, (I wish I could remember who or where but I canโ€™t at the moment) that hope is not an emotion, or mindset but a Person. Iโ€™d never thought of hope that way before. But of course! Jesus is my Hope! โค๏ธ๐Ÿ˜„

I get what youโ€™re saying, Jeff. If the kindergartener was hoping to dunk the basketball on a regulation height goal before she started 1st grade, that would simply be wishful thinking. Thankfully, as Christians, our hope is built on work God has already doneโ€”the redemption of mankind. Thank you for reading and commenting, brother. God Bless!

Hope is a sustainable strategy, depending on what youโ€™re hoping for and who or what has caused you to hope. The wee lassie knows sheโ€™s going to grow into a bigger person who will indeed make that basket. Sheโ€™s seen many others do it so itโ€™s a sustainable hope.

As you showed here, Jesus is the one Who gives us all hope for eternity! Thank you for your thoughts today!

There must be plenty of voices the little one does not listen to keep that hope going. Part of the strategy…good one David

The young girl will begin to make baskets with the basketballs because she is persistent and does not give up.

Ecclesiastes 9:11 “I saw something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong; neither is the bread to the wise, nor the wealth to the intelligent, nor the favor to the skillful. For time and chance happen to all.”

Amen brother! Your spur analogy reminds me of what the writer of Hebrews said: โ€œSpur one another on to love and good deeds.โ€ We must be purposeful dealers in hope. This thought would make a good post in itself. Tag, youโ€™re it, my brother!

Nice post, David. Hope spurs us onwardโ€”it fuels our passion to keep trying. The Enemy would have us give up and lay down in abandonment. But we know, in Christ, we are victorious.
