Still

Not long ago, I told the story of an autumn butterfly who defied the odds by flying on a sunny November day. Yet the first frosty morning was a few weeks ago.

How is this possible!?

It turns out many species of butterfly can survive freezing temperatures by going into a dormant state. Then, once it hits 55-60 degrees Fahrenheit, they can fly again.

I was also surprised to learn that most butterflies only live between two and four weeks. This means my wee flitting friend may have survived in her chrysalis through the first hard freeze.🥶 Then, when the weather warmed, she came out in her final form. 🦋

What a time to be born…

My friend Pastor Pete, from Praise2worship.net, shared a great thought about a mid-autumn born butterfly:

Maybe the butterfly is too young to know his life is impossible.

Pastor Pete

I woke this morning still thinking about my miracle friend, and the Holy Spirit gave me a word for the day: protagonist. In a drama or literary work, the protagonist is the central figure of the narrative. He or she is the leading character–the hero, or heroine.

Then God added commentary: “David, the butterfly is not the central character in this miracle story, I Am.”

Ouch!  How many times have I tried to make my own sunshine, to warm up the world so I can fly, only to realize this isn’t my role?

Life Lesson: Sometimes it’s alright to be dormant for a while. We can’t make the sunshine or bring the warmth, so it’s best to wait on the Lord.

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word, I put my hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.

Psalm 130:5-6 (NIV)

Thank you for reading, kind reader. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

A special shout out to my Scottish Canadian friend at Don’t Lose Hope for the reminder: It’s sometimes good to be dormant for a while. Thank you, sister. Girl Power!

David, you’ve woven together a science lesson with a literature lesson with a Bible lesson. Well done! Love how it incorporated the words of Pastor Pete.

My takeaway: God created the butterfly to illustrate transformation…and miracles.

Ain’t that the truth, Gary. I think the “skeeters” are long dead here, but a warm stretch just might bring them back.

I wonder if the butterfly time in stasis, when it’s cold, counts against them? Mosquitoes “frozen” time sure does not count.
God has a way of setting us up for sure

David, this post is profound. Too often I try to make things happen and forget the Father, warms up my world and tenderly watches over me. All creation is singing his praises!

I need this thought today. Going through my health issues lately I have felt “dormant”. But it is okay – just wait on the Lord for renewed strength.

Isn’t our Father God amazing brother, every bit of life is a lesson that He is the Central Character in all things…even of a butterfly in November.

God is always the main character. He reveals himself to us through his creation and blessings. Sometimes the blessings are small ones to get our attention.
