Slow Down to Get Around

The other day I got stuck in the slow lane behind a garbage truck. Even with the air on recirculate, I could smell the contents of a McDonald’s dumpster. “Well, this stinks,” I said through clenched teeth.😬

Finally, I was able to slide over into the fast lane, only to get caught by a red light.😖 But that’s when I had time to read the sign on the back.

“How can I get around you if I slow down?!”🤔 I asked the offensive truck. Then I realized what the sign means. When one is traveling in a neighborhood behind a giant garbage truck, it’s best to pass it carefully. You don’t want to hit a sanitation worker, or meet another vehicle head on.

A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.

Proverbs 19:11

Frankly, the sign on the garbage truck was a sign from God. At least for me. Recently, I’ve felt a bit stuck (that’s twice in one post) behind situations that, quite simply, stink. The temptation to speed around them has been strong.

So, what if I WANT you to follow a proverbial “garbage truck” for awhile?” said the Holy Spirit. “Is it really a deal-breaker?” Well, when you put it that way, Lord… I suppose I can slow down to get around.

Is it okay if I hold my nose?

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️prayers and love.

So true, Priscilla. And sometimes, the Lord gives us no choice–we have to slow down to get around.

We don’t always want to go God’s speed limit. I reckon He has speed zones for a reason.

My dad used to say I had two speeds: “full throttle, and asleep.” Slowing down to get around does not come naturally to me!
Agreed, looking for the good, or at least the neutral, can help with both resiliency and perspective.
I love your expression to appreciate what is well without fail. It rolls off the tongue—“well without fail,” and, for some of us Okies, it rhymes!

This post speaks to me. I’m thinking (really just paraphrasing), sometimes when stuck in a stinky situation, you have to slow down enough to look for the good in each small moment. I often brace myself for the day, but my morning is always really good. My afternoon is trickier. Now to slow down and appreciate what is well without fail.

The garbage stink wasn’t as bad as a skunk and didn’t last as long.

Me either, sister! If we truly believe Romans 8:28-we know that God can work anything and everything for the good of those who love him and are called according to his purpose.

Fantastic! And today the Holy Spirit is awarding you stinky Mc Donalds bonus points, so yes please, hold your nose! I don’t want anything God allows in my life to be a deal breaker!

Each pet is unique and some take time to grow in their trust of their humans. I had a schnauzer named Ripley. He and his momma, Noel, would run out the door and around the neighborhood and back to my door as they greeted me when I got home. It would scare me to death at first. Ripley had a great smile. I’m glad you’re enjoying their company.

Thanks, brother! Yes, 2022 seems like a long time ago. 2020 feels like another lifetime ago. Our Schnauzer loves walks, but our other dog is still learning to walk on a leash.

What a great sign and lesson for us to all stop our rushing around going in circles most of the time anyway. Our garbage trucks usually pass by here about five a.m., so I’ve never been stuck behind one. For me it’s usually the school bus. Have a blessed weekend, Dave!

Agreed. I once lived in a town that had freight trains passing through several times a day. Folk disliked waiting for them to pass, but many times had choice. I’ve had some of my best thoughts and even words from the Lord while waiting for a train to pass.

You’re right, David. Sometimes you have no option but to go slowly, put up with the smell, and wait patiently for as long as it takes

An oldie but goodie, as they say, David. 2022 suddenly seems like so long ago. It’s interesting when we lean in and listen to the Holy Spirit. What a week. Blessings to you and Nancy. Hope you can take the dogs out for a walk. Blessings 🙏

Good post David. It made me smile remembering the many times I have been stuck behind tractors & trailers of harvest produce lately, it is that time of year again. A reminder of our Lord’s harvest of souls is always worthwhile meditating…even at 30mph! God bless you and Nancy today brother 🙏 🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
