Territory | Short Story

It’s “dark-thirty,” as the local cattle ranchers like to say, with a full moon rising over the prairie. Just across the road from a little town, the mama cows and their calves are already bedded down on the lush Kentucky bluegrass. Nothing much is happening… yet. But if you look closely, on the far side of the pasture, you’ll see them–coyotes, faintly silhouetted against the tree line. They arrive, one by one, reunited after a long day’s hunt, their silver-gray bodies reflecting the moonlight.

They sit back on their haunches in a loosely formed circle, watching and waiting for the alpha to begin. The large male throws his head back and begins to yip-howl with all his might. The whole pack joins in territorial celebration. From the sounds of it, you’d think there were a dozen or more of them, but there’s only half that many. It’s a bluff, to keep unwelcome coyotes away. “Stay out of our tree line.”

From a dry creek bed, a half mile away, a rival pack answers, “This is our territory,” they yip. “Keep off our creek.”

A half mile in the other direction, there’s a not so quiet cul-de-sac, lined with a half-dozen cookie cutter houses. In one backyard, a dad lounges poolside, nursing a longneck while blasting Country music.

The neighbor on the other side of a tall privacy fence isn’t entertained. It’s family cookout night, and he doesn’t like “hillbilly” music. Challenge accepted. He cranks up Frank Sinatra. “Keep it on your side of the fence.” he growls.

It’s an odd mix: “Old Blue Eyes” battling it out with “Bochephus” accompanied by prairie wolves in stereo.

Beer guy blinks first, turning down Hank Junior’s A Country Boy Can Survive. The guy on the grill grins and dials back the volume–returning to “chill” mode. Nobody sings Mack the Knife like Sinatra. Nobody.

Close by, the tree line coyotes keep going: yipping and howling into the eerie night. They need to dissuade the larger creek bed pack. There’s no lounging poolside on the unforgiving prairie.

Kind reader, this isn’t my usual fare. I hope you don’t mind.

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Thank you, Ann Marie. I appreciate your thoughts. I enjoy writing about animals in nature, and then exploring how they parallel and overlap with humanity.

Your opening scene is vivid and immediately draws the reader into the nighttime prairie setting. The comparison between the coyotes’ territorial calls and the human neighbors’ musical rivalry is clever and brings humor and originality to your writing. I loved the descriptive language like “silver-gray bodies reflecting the moonlight” and “lush Kentucky bluegrass.” It painted a wonderful picture.

Yes. We live on the edge of town, and can hear them out in the fields.

Thank you, Matthew. I’m posting another short story today. I don’t think I would have gone this far with my fiction if it weren’t for your influence. Your short stories make me want to create my own.

Thank you, Jo. The story closely mirrors my actual living conditions. My wife and I live just one block away from the open prairie, and one of our neighbors likes to play Country music loudly on his back porch. Meanwhile, the coyotes howl.
Thank you for stopping by. God Bless!

Good point, Pastor Pete. Maybe a sequel is in order. In the mean time, I left room for the reader to complete the story themselves. I probably picked this up from you—leave the reader wanting more. 🤗

Nice little story Dave. It does have its message, but it also gets me wondering what happens next. Do the coyotes try to sneak up on a sleeping calf? Will one of the wives shout, “Turn that music back up, I can’t hear it from the hottub?”

I’m with Alan on this one, David! I enjoyed this so much! All creatures want to “stake” and protect their territory!
I’m certain all readers can relate to this! Well-done, my friend!

Thank you, brother. We live near the edge of our little town, and can often hear the coyotes on the nearby prairie. One of our neighbors likes to play his Country music outside and loud. So, I guess this is a bit of an autobiographical post.
Thank you for stopping by. God Bless you and Susan, as well. 🙏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇺🇸
