Where the gravel road ends, near a winding creek, there’s a corn field. They say they saw him go in. A petite brunette stops her bright red jeep near the edge, headlights cutting into the green maze. She leaves the driver’s door open and strides down a row. “Ben? Ben!” she screams into the tasseled stocks. Nothing. He’s been missing for a week; this is the first sighting. She stays for over an hour, walking down every row, calling his name. Dejected, she trudges back to the Jeep, and there he is, Ben, the Chocolate Labrador, laughing out the window.
