Hurry Up or Wait?

It happened over two decades ago, but it feels like yesterday. I knew it was time to leave the church where I’d served for three and a half years. But I didn’t have an exit strategy.

“No problem,” I thought. “I’ll just put out some feelers while I decide what to do.” A week later my pastor called me into his office, “David, one of our deacons has a wife who’s the assistant manager at Kmart. She wondering why you applied for a job there. Is everything okay?

oops

At that moment, it hit me like a brick: I was facing a major life decision and hadn’t even talked to God about it. The next morning, my Bible fell open to Isaiah.

Let him who walks in the dark and has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God, But now, all you who light fires and provide yourselves with torches, go, walk in the light of your fires and of the torches you have set ablaze. This is what you shall receive from my hand: You will lie down in torment.

Isaiah 50: 10b-11 (NIV)

ouch

Kind reader, has this happened to you? Like me, have you searched in the dark instead of waiting for God’s light? The scripture above was like a bucket of cold water over my head. It prompted me to trust God, like He said, until a position at another church opened up two months later.

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

James 4:10 (NIV)

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

The pastor and theologian Eugene Peterson talks about following the unforced rhythms of God’s grace. I believe he referred to the scripture about walking with The Spirit means keeping in step with The Spirit. Thank you for reading and commenting, Jo. God Bless!

That’s a resounding yes from me, too. I think Nancy’s comment above sums it up nicely…the School of Spiritual Maturity will always be open for business this side of heaven!

God’s School of Spiritual Maturity. Yes, I’ve gone to that school as well, Nancy. 😊 It’s only natural to take things into my own hands. But supernatural (God’s direction) is so much better. Thank you for sharing. God Bless!

Oh yes–I’ve run ahead of God too. When the Spirit finally gets my attention I feel so foolish. Why would I do such a thing when my all-wise, all-knowing Father is ready to lead the way?! I’ve been a slow student in God’s School of Spiritual Maturity.

David, this is a familiar message that God has spoken to me, also. He says to me, “Quit making decisions on your own, without listening to me.” I have done things my way so many times and God keeps saying that he wants in relationship with him, not an after thought!

God can run faster than we can so trying to run ahead of him is not going to work, 🙂
Waiting on him is much better.
When I think about trying to start without God, I think about how sometimes during worship I think it is time to start singing the next verse in church and quickly realize I was wrong lol

A good idea isn’t necessarily a God plan. This is exactly what I wanted to say in my post, Nicola.😀 I’m glad the Lord used my words to point you to prayer. I’ll be praying for you, as well. God Bless!

Needed to hear that today David. I’ve done just that this week. Just because everyone else thought my “exit strategy” was a good idea doesn’t make it a God plan. I need to 🙏

It’s thoughts like these that keep reminding me how small my faith is. I, too, have relied too much on my own reasoning. Just can’t seem to help myself! *sigh*

I’m not sure. In this case, new math could be numbers with exponents. God likes to use those, too. His blessings—to the 3rd power- to you, sister!

I hear you, Gary. Me too. God has given me a second chance, or third, to get it right. But, you’re correct, it wasn’t the same as waiting for Him in the first place. It’s better not to need a do-over.

The Word of God as a bucket of cold water reminds me of “washed by the cleansing of God’s Word.” (Eph 5:26) And thanks for the memory of the flashing blue light specials! I remember Kmart!

You’re welcome. It’s easier to do in theory than in practice, but waiting on the Lord brings a true reward. Thank you for reading and sharing! God Bless.

“God doesn’t need our help, but chooses to use us.” You’ve hit the nail on the head, brother Andy B.

I agree, a little more maturity now means I hit the brakes more often when it’s time to wait for the Lord.

    Thank you for stopping by.

    God Bless!

Running ahead of God is not a good idea. I know this firsthand because I have done so (too many times) and then God has to use drastic measures to draw me back to where I’m supposed to be.

i’m with you buddy…guilty as charged more than i’d care to remember while I seek to ‘assist God’

and then i remember He doesn’t need my help, but choose to use me…so i try a little more patience

i’m getting better as i mature…i’m more inclined to wait for God rather than push to find a weak spot

I can certainly relate. Lack of trust and lack of patience can cause us to seek our own solutions, Thank you for the reminder to trust God and His timing. Have a blessed weekend!
