As soon as I walked through the door yesterday afternoon, I knew where it was. My nose led me to the kitchen where a freshly baked strawberry bundt cake cooled on the counter. No, it wasn’t ready to eat, but Nancy was out watering her flowers, and I couldn’t resist.
Two pieces later, with crumbs on the floor, she walks in: “I was going to put frosting on that!“
Busted.
Later, I thought about how my taking the cake reminds me of arrival and dismissal at school. Getting students there is a piece of cake; they may show up early, on time, or late, but they’re dutifully dropped off and entrusted to our care. On the other hand, getting them home is like putting on the icing—a little here, a little there, until every kid is covered. Are you picturing a little girl or boy with a dab of white frosting on their nose? Stop it!
This past Thursday at summer camp, we had a kindergartner who was still with us twenty minutes after dismissal. The little guy normally attends another school in town, so we only had one parent contact number for him. After two calls went straight to voicemail, it was time for a little detective work.
Me: “Your mom isn’t answering. Where does your dad work?”
Kindergartener: “McDonald’s”
Me: “Cool! Which one?”
Kindergartener: “The one we go to all the time.”😂
Ok, that was funny, but we were getting nowhere. Then I remembered: my young friend was picked up on the previous Tuesday by a daycare van. The name of a church was on the side of it. “Think, David! What was the name?!”
Me: “Do you go to daycare at a church?”
Kindergartener: “Yes, it’s a church.”
Me: “Which one?”
Kindergartener: “It’s the one with church and God together.”
Bingo. Now I remembered! It’s the daycare from the First Church of God!
A phone call confirmed it; someone from the church came to pick up my young friend.
From him (Christ) the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
Ephesians 4:16 (NIV)
Kind reader, a kindergarten theologian reminded me that genuine Christian unity is when the church and God work together.
🙏 Heavenly Father may all who trust in Christ for salvation stand together as one!
Behold, how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
Psalm 133:1 (NIV)
Now, that’s the icing on the cake!
Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.
