The Icing on the Cake

As soon as I walked through the door yesterday afternoon, I knew where it was. My nose led me to the kitchen where a freshly baked strawberry bundt cake cooled on the counter. No, it wasn’t ready to eat, but Nancy was out watering her flowers, and I couldn’t resist.

Two pieces later, with crumbs on the floor, she walks in: “I was going to put frosting on that!

Busted.

Later, I thought about how my taking the cake reminds me of arrival and dismissal at school. Getting students there is a piece of cake; they may show up early, on time, or late, but they’re dutifully dropped off and entrusted to our care. On the other hand, getting them home is like putting on the icing—a little here, a little there, until every kid is covered. Are you picturing a little girl or boy with a dab of white frosting on their nose? Stop it!

This past Thursday at summer camp, we had a kindergartner who was still with us twenty minutes after dismissal. The little guy normally attends another school in town, so we only had one parent contact number for him. After two calls went straight to voicemail, it was time for a little detective work.

Me: “Your mom isn’t answering. Where does your dad work?”

Kindergartener: “McDonald’s”

Me: “Cool!  Which one?”

Kindergartener: “The one we go to all the time.”😂

Ok, that was funny, but we were getting nowhere. Then I remembered: my young friend was picked up on the previous Tuesday by a daycare van. The name of a church was on the side of it. “Think, David! What was the name?!”

Me: “Do you go to daycare at a church?”

Kindergartener: “Yes, it’s a church.”

Me: “Which one?”

Kindergartener: “It’s the one with church and God together.”

Bingo.  Now I remembered!  It’s the daycare from the First Church of God!

A phone call confirmed it; someone from the church came to pick up my young friend.

From him (Christ) the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

Ephesians 4:16 (NIV)

Kind reader, a kindergarten theologian reminded me that genuine Christian unity is when the church and God work together.

🙏 Heavenly Father may all who trust in Christ for salvation stand together as one!

Behold, how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

Psalm 133:1 (NIV)

Now, that’s the icing on the cake!

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Years ago when I taught school south of Lexington, KY, we had a little first-grader left behind on the first day of school. His office file contained scanty contact info also. When we asked, “Where do you live?” he replied, “Near a big black barn!” (No doubt you realize the number of big black barns in tobacco country–even more so back in the 70s.) Finally the mother called the school. The little guy hadn’t gotten on his bus that afternoon! / As for church and God working together: the results of joy, blessings, fulfillment and fruitfulness are indeed icing on the cake of life. Great analogy, David!

Kindergarten children are so fun to interact with but getting the info can be tricky. I am glad the little boy had a master detective helping him get home.

Having to be gluten free I enjoy things like bundt cake vicariously through others 🙂

AMEN- Church and God absolutely need to be together

It gave me a chuckle (inside) as well, Manette Kay. When he said, “It’s God and church together “ my spiritual alarm clock ⏰ went off! As you say, “Jehovah bless you.”

Great illustration! Now I got cake on the brain – lol Funny story – a couple months after we got married my new husband mentioned about how much I loved cake. I was, like, what? He said, “Every time a commercial with cake comes on, you’ll like ‘MMM, cake!’ ” I didn’t believe it at the moment, but after that, I did notice I did that – lol So, almost 27 years later, there’s been much, “MMM cake!” being heard by myself as well as my husband and four kids. LOL.

Thanks, Pete. And that’s two weeks in a row for kindergartner wisdom! I knew when the little boy said it, that church and God working together was a simple, yet profound thought. Thanks for reading my post to your wife. I often read your poetry to my wife—Nancy. Blessings!

Thanks, Betty! I had a line that said church and God working together is simple, but not easy, but left it out. I figured a highly perceptive person, such as yourself, would come to the same conclusion.

The cake is a stock photo, as Nancy frosted and sliced the rest of the cake and then froze the pieces. Now I have to thaw first before gobbling them up.🙂

All the best to you, Dan, and family!

Good detective work, David! I would hope that a church and God would work together. Sometimes the best ideas are the most simple, but the devil is in the details, I suppose. That cake looks good!
