Paws and Reflect (4): Finding More Strays

Hello again. It’s Buck. I’m a stray canine from Cana—you know, the little town in Galilee? But you’re not reading about just another homeless dog; this pup walked the dusty roads with Jesus! Yes, the one they call Immanuel was my best friend.

I first met Jesus when he did a miracle at a wedding in my hometown. You can read about it here.

I’d been shadowing Christ awhile, so you’d think there would be no surprises. But still, two years later, they kept coming!

For instance, one day Jesus taught beside the lake–He loved the water, just like me–and when it was over we walked back toward town.

On the road into Capernaum, we passed by a tax collector’s booth. Jesus stopped to talk with the man behind the table, which was nothing unusual. But then He surprised everyone when he said to him, “Come, follow me.”

Now folks, tax people were the biggest strays of all. Nobody, and I mean nobody, wanted to join their pack. Because they collected money for the Romans, and too much at that, people like Matthew (the guy at the booth) were hated by the Jews. Yet here was my friend Jesus–picking up another stray, which was one of His favorite things to do. Why was I so surprised!?

Well, Matthew joined the Jesus pack that day, and the same evening he threw a big party for everyone. I say everyone, it was Christ and his closest friends, plus a bunch of other tax collectors and people the religious leaders called “sinners.”

I was outside the house, enjoying a big pile of scraps, when three of these “Fair-uh-sees” (sorry, Buck is a better smeller than speller) came to the door.

GRRR!

I stood, facing them, with the hairs on my back raised; even showed them my teeth! I spell their name like it sounds, but it’s strange: there’s nothing fair about how these guys see anything. If you don’t follow God their way they call you bad names. This breed of “church” people weren’t welcome here!

Leave it, Buck,” said Jesus’ other best friend, John. Where did he come from? Oh, well. It was those guys’ lucky day, because they weren’t gonna get past me! As it turned out, they didn’t want to come in anyway. They just came to give Jesus and His friends a hard time.

“Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” they asked John. Before he could answer, Jesus appeared over his shoulder. Oh boy, this was gonna be good!

It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.

Jesus – Matthew 9:12-13 (NIV)

Go Jesus! Go Jesus!

Those Fair-uh-sees left with their tails tucked between their legs. Well, they would have–if they had tails.

Human friends, here’s one thing Buck saw over and over: when Jesus loved people it changed their lives for the better. His mercy reached me, and other strays–like tax collectors–and we were never the same. Nobody in the world loves you like Jesus!

This piece of historical fiction (the dog part, not the Bible story) is dedicated to the memory of the real Buck: a chocolate lab who was a gun dog par excellence. That’s him below, sitting in a duck blind watching his owner for the next command. It was his intense gaze (in the photo) that sparked this story. May each of us look to God with the same level of devotion.

Photo used with permission from Buck’s owner. Scripture added by Beth Alisan.

*The story of the calling of Matthew is found in Matthew 9:9-13, Mark 2:14-17, and Luke 5:27-32.

A special thanks to Beth Alisan, from lessonsfromalab , for helping make this story possible.

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Thank you, Jeff! My Paws and Reflect stories don’t always have high views, but I enjoy writing them. I want Buck to be relatable and instructive, without being too preachy. Thanks for reading and commenting, brother!

This was SO much fun and instructive! I love how you’ve developed Buck’s character and use “dog language,” like being a better smeller than speller. Really well done, making the Word very accessible!

Sorry I haven’t been by in a while! Just haven’t been on the computer much anyway lately. Trying to get back in the habit.

Thank you, Beth. I kept thinking, “Where do I catch up with Buck next?” Then it occurred to me: a stray dog and a tax collector (in Bible times) had much in common. Well, somewhat. After all, Buck was both dashingly handsome and adorable at the same time. I want to continue this story line, but I’m not sure where to go next. Thanks always for your encouragement and support. Buck’s fictional adventures with Jesus wouldn’t have happened without you!

Oh my goodness David, what a delight to discover another of Buck’s adventures. They keep getting better and better and better. Through Buck’s eyes you’ve painted a clear understanding of the human response to tax collectors of the day as well as Jesus’ response to the Pharisees. I laughed aloud at better smeller than speller. Can’t wait to see where Buck follows Jesus next.

Yes they truly are! I couldn’t have Buck just lie there–in the presence of religious bigots.😳 Dogs read people too well.🙂

I’m not too good with Latin, but that’s right: Whatever will be will be. The greatest satisfaction is turning thoughts into stories.😊

They didn’t have Labradors back then either. But, thanks to time travel (a DeLorean with Flux Capacitor) Buck is able to enjoy the best of both worlds!

And I love how Buck is wearing a camo vest. I didn’t know they had those in the days of Jesus! Absolutely love this post!

I love this idea. I can see a whole children’s book series about Jesus, Buck, and friends.

Thank you, sangrado amigo (holy friend)! This verse from 1 John is what reminded me how Jesus changes lives through His love:
“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” 1 John 3:1

🙏His richest blessings to you and your husband.

I love this, David. “when Jesus loved people it changed their lives for the better” – yes! Thank God for that! We are all changed people, thanks to Jesus. And, “May each of us look to God with the same level of devotion.” Amen to that! Thanks for this, my brother! Blessings!

I hear you, Lady Sheep Dog. Writing here has always been my only goal. But I’m open to following the path God has laid out for me. I am grateful you stopped my little blog today. God Bless!

I don’t recommend writing a book at all. I recommend keep writing and posting them here where anyone can access them at anytime. Now if Jesus says write a book, then by all means do that. Thanks for posting this wonderful and cute story.

David, the Buck stories are great. Continue with them as prompted by the Spirit. Regarding encouragement to consider publishing a book of these devotions, I agree. You’ll know when it’s time, there are many 30-day devotionals marketed. God bless you as you follow His lead.

Are you a sci-guy? It’s hard for me to be impartial, but I thought it was a good read. It also was her first full-length novel, and she improved the complexity of her plots as more books were written.

I have a problem here David…I run out of superlatives for these wonderful stories a long time ago! 😊
Even though they make great children’s stories I love them, as many other adults do too. You must surely think of these as a collection that would serve our Lord well in publication as a book?

Remember that Beth is walking Adi every day and only shares 2-3 lessons and a few more photos each month. You’re doing great with 4, just enjoy them at the pace they come.

Either title works well, Pete. Beth could also include some of her photos of Adi and Summer.

Thanks for the encouragement! I’m not sure how many Buck stories I can write. Blessings!

I love this Dave. I’ve been encouraging Beth to compile a book of her doggie-devotionals (or maybe Labrador-Lessons sounds better). These installments of yours about Buck certainly should be given a chapter of their own.
