Breakfast Down the Hall

Every morning, when I come in from car line at my school, I walk the main hallway–all 900 feet of it–to help monitor students.

Children, already laden down with their school backpacks, pick up breakfast in the cafeteria, and then walk the hundreds-of-feet gauntlet to their classrooms.

Not all the breakfast items survive the trip unscathed. Gravity gets a say. It’s those flimsy cardboard boats everything comes in!

I’m usually only a few steps in when I find evidence of what’s on the menu. There’s half a bagel, at the turn to second grade hallway. A little farther down, a carton of milk lies belly-up by a bulletin board. Next, by the main entry, a small container of cream cheese with another half a bagel. Finally, there’s a single red apple, rolled up against a playground door. Does it find recess appealing?

Individually, the food items don’t tell me all that much, until about 600 feet in. That’s when the puzzle comes together. Breakfast today is a bagel with cream cheese, fresh fruit, and milk! If I happened to be a “floor eater,” which I am not, I could pick up the whole menu in one trip.

The Christian life feels like this sometimes; it’s a long walk, and I’m carrying a bunch of stuff, and this flimsy cardboard boat won’t quite hold my breakfast.

gravity gets a say.

But God gets a say, too. And it goes like this:

He (Christ) is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

Colossians 1:17 (NIV)

Just yesterday, I read this, and pictured Jesus, walking down life’s long hallway–before you and I came along–holding everything together. He knows where the dropping points are, and can help us along the way.

Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Hebrews 2:18 (NIV)

Kind reader, it may be near the end of the hallway before what’s on the “menu” is clear. And Jesus, ever the consummate custodian, will replace everything that fell on the floor.

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

It’s a comfort to know, despite the mess, that God believes in me, that He’s holding me together, and that He’s there to help amid temptation.

I love your approach here, Malcolm. If our containers are strengthened and lengthened, we can help others in their journey. Thank you for sharing this refreshing perspective. God Bless!

Accepting that my life is held in the flimsy cardboard boat that stuff spills out of…. (I love the picture) perhaps I pray that God will that strengthen and enlarge my container so it can hold everything securely – perhaps make it big and strong enough to help others with their breakfast…

David, you’ve given us a spiritually nutritional cafeteria breakfast to chew on today. ‘He knows where the dropping points are, and can help us along the way.” These words make me wonder how often He is standing by our side just waiting for us to turn and ask him to help us with our unwieldly load of backpack and tray. So grateful that He doesn’t turn away in disgust each time I fail to ask for help and drop something.

It is peaceful to reflect on the fact that God knows all things and holds all things in His capable hands. Sometimes, I wish I knew where the dropping points are, but, then again, it’s better that I don’t. There’s only one God, and I am not Him. Thank you for sharing.

Ah, the five second rule. Good point! If I find a slice of breakfast pizza (topping side up) I’m going to pick it up and eat it. Bagels? Na. They are too chewy.

Amen, sister! There are ups and downs and in between, and God remains the same. He’s remarkably predictable! Thank you for sharing. God Bless!

“The Christian life feels like this sometimes; it’s a long walk, and I’m carrying a bunch of stuff, and this flimsy cardboard boat won’t quite hold my breakfast.” – yes! I was nodding my head when I read this. Life can feel fragile and unstable, like a wobbly tray full of food. Thank you for pointing us back to Jesus. He is always the answer and can help us hold everything together. 🙌🙏

You can only be a “floor eater” if you pick it up before 5 seconds have passed. Nicely done brother!

Love this analogy David. I especially love how you pointed out He knows the trouble areas before we even get there. It brings a peace to reflect on that.
