The Chase

When we were younger, Jimmy was one of “those kids.” He had a mean streak. And it only got worse, when his dad gave him a Doberman Pinscher puppy for his twelfth birthday.😳

Jimmy named his girl guard dog Betty, and she was soon a 65-pound menace. The nasty canine followed him everywhere—off leash—snarling at and chasing anything that moved.

That same summer, my younger brother and I rode our bicycles up to the community playground. When we turned a corner by the sidewalk, there they were: Jimmy and Betty.

Wouldn’t you know, as we pedaled past, he sicced her on us! We skedaddled out of there as fast as our legs could churn, with Betty hot on our heels.

Then, out of nowhere comes this big German Shepherd. He chases down the Doberman, from an angle, and cuts her off! I look over my shoulder to see Betty frozen in her tracks, with the statuesque Shepherd between us.

When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him.

Isaiah 59:19 (NKJV)

Kind reader, it’s in The Book—God wins. When the devil sends his “Dobermans” chasing after us, the Good Shepherd cuts them off!

The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all.

Psalm 34:19 (NIV)

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Thank you, Crystal. The Good Shepherd used a German Shepherd to intercept a nasty dog at just the right moment. All the Dobermans I’ve met have seemed to be all business, but not “off the chain” like Betty. She was not properly trained or restrained. Happy belated Thanksgiving. Thank you for reading and sharing. God Bless!

What a great story of the Shepherd’s divine protection! And sometimes the Dobermans seem so sweet—like the one in this photo.

My childhood and youth were punctuated by sojourns with various strays. The big Shepherd was one of them. As I recall, he was only around our neighborhood for a couple of weeks. And then he was gone. Beth, I have no doubt God used our canine friend to avert an even worse experience with Betty the Doberman.
Happy Thanksgiving, and God Bless! Thanks for reading and commenting.

Wow David, that is a scary situation to face in your youth. Sounds like the Lord deployed that Shepherd.

That’s mostly the issue with Pitbulls, the owners and lack of proper training.

When we call, they have five days to respond, really? Five days? If there are enough calls or its considered a vicious dog report, then they bring it down to 12 hours, but still, that’s plenty of time for the dogs to run off or whatever. It can be maddening to try to get this problem solved.

Betty, the Doberman’s biggest issue was she didn’t get properly trained AND she had a mischievous owner.

Yes! God’s love, and a dog’s love can sneak up on us. It’s a good thing the good Lord doesn’t bite. My wife saw some Cane Corso puppies a few months ago. They were so cute, but we passed.

We have plenty of stray dogs in my little town, too. Especially on weekends, when the dog catcher isn’t on patrol.

My sister used to have a Doberman/German Shepherd mix, her name was Guard Dog. My sister would have to take her for a ride in the car, just around the block to get her to stop dancing and whining at the door that lead out to their garage. She was a sweet dog and very friendly, until someone she didn’t like or sensed was not good came around, then she lived up to her name.

My husband named our Pitbull Betty, And she is quite the mouthy dog. Barks at little noises and when the neighbors across the street get in and out of their cars. So annoying, but we love her. She is a loving dog and was a rescue from a bad situation, so we have to take the bad with the good. Hmmm, does that sound like some guy who hung on a cross some years back? Is He helping us to practice unconditional love? Hmmm, He can be sneaky sometimes, no?

I had that post in my inbox too. We (my family) have been dealing with not only barking dogs, but dogs that nip at ya and chase you down. Literally, in real life. We have had to call the city more times than we should have to, both because of neighbor’s loose dogs and for strays.

You bring a fresh angle here, Stacey. I’m reminded of how Paul said in one of his letters, “We don’t wrestle against flesh and blood, but against evil forces in the heavenly realms.” Of course, these forces want us to over and/or under react to their evil schemes. The wise thing to do is to fight smart—under the direction and power of the Holy Spirit.
Thank you for sharing! His best to you.

The timing of this is uncanny! A friend and spiritual mentor of mine recently told me that God told her that she should ignore “barking dogs.” She said it’s meaning is metaphorical, as God used that expression to teach her to ignore some spiritual attacks rather than engage with them. Thank you!

When I used to trim the trees on a large estate there was a Dobe there named George, who was big and intimidating. I could not come down between trees, until the cook who come out and wag her finger in George’s face. Amazingly, this little lady could get him to meekly lie down on command. As long as Christa stood next to him, it was safe to come down and do my work. Christa reminds me of your German shepherd. What a blessing how God sends his angels to watch over us!
