Hello, humans. It’s me again, Buck–a dog who followed Jesus. If you want to know what it’s like to spend a day with the Man Himself, I’m the canine who can tell you.
First, Jesus wakes up very early in the morning before the sun shines. He goes somewhere to talk with His dad, and next, when he comes back, it’s breakfast time. Then, we get to work.
My best friend does three jobs: he walks, stops and talks, and helps people. And I’m always right there with him, or at least try to be. Some of His special friends shoo me away, but it never works for long. All I need to do is bring something to Jesus—like his sandals. They get a little slobbery, but He doesn’t seem to mind. He always smiles and says, “Thank you…Buck.”And then we’re back together, like two pups in a pack.
There was this one time, though, when Jesus almost didn’t stop for someone who needed him. We were walking through Jericho with a huge crowd pressing against us, when I saw a man sitting beside the road–asking for help, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” He yelled it over and over. But only a few people heard him, and they told him to be quiet.
“Wait a minute. This is all wrong!” I whimpered “Anyone who needs Jesus should get to meet him.” It was time to double back and do something.
“Aroooooooooo…”
I stood next to the man, howling as loud and long as I could. And I kept it up, too.
Somebody said to him, “Cheer up, Jesus is coming back.” Of course he is, people! I told him to. I noticed the guy didn’t look straight at anyone who talked to him. Maybe his eyes couldn’t work right? When Jesus got to him, He asked, “What do you want me to do for you?” The man said, “Lord, I want to see.”
I knew it!
Sometimes Jesus rubbed mud into blind people’s eyes to heal them, but today he just said it–“Receive your sight; your faith has healed you“–and it happened!
The man was smiling and running around looking at everyone. He saw me, too, standing next to Jesus. “You’re my new best friend!” he said. “Thanks, I get that a lot.” I said with a laugh and a wag of my tail.
This piece of historical fiction (the dog part, not the miracle) is dedicated to the memory of the real Buck: a chocolate lab who was a gun dog par excellence. That’s him below, sitting in a duck blind watching his owner for the next command. It was his intense gaze (in the photo) that sparked this story. May each of us look to God with the same level of devotion.

Look to the Lord and His strength. Seek His face always.
Psalm 105:4
*The story of the blind beggar who receives his sight is found in Matthew 20:29-34; Mark 10: 46-52; and Luke 18:35-43
