The Strongest Love on Earth

Singing at nursing homes is unlike anywhere else. The audience loves every minute of it, though many of them are unable to show their appreciation in tangible ways. A tap of a foot, a clap here and there, or a smile from one of their friends is like a standing ovation at Carnegie Hall.

Last Saturday when we sang, a middle-aged woman who sat in front, seemed to enjoy listening to the hymns, but her listless expression and limited movement told me she may have suffered a stroke.

After we finished, my wife and I went around to speak with each resident, and as we came to her, she gingerly stretched out her hand, and said, “You know my mother.”

My first thought was, “I doubt it; you probably think I’m someone else.” But then out of curiosity I asked, “What’s your mother’s name?” When she told me, I was amazed because it was a teacher with whom I had worked and who had been a big encouragement to me in the Lord. She had often prayed for our children and family, and in shock I suddenly realized that here I was talking to her daughter!

Yet this providential meeting also gave me pause. Mrs. N, the woman’s mother, had already suffered so much. First she lost her son, and then her husband, to cancer, and now here I was talking with her daughter in a nursing home. This made me wonder if there is anything stronger than a mother’s love. Then I remembered, yes, in fact, there is something–The love of God.

Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.

Jeremiah 31:3b (NKJV)

Last night, as I read through my old text messages from Mrs. N., who is now in her eighties, I saw that every one of them was a reminder that I, and my family, are safely in God’s hands. His is truly the strongest love on earth!

There is no pit so deep, that God’s love is not deeper still. Corrie Ten Boom

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

So true, my brother! So true. God’s love is in 3D: “And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together will all the saints , to grasp how wide and long, and high and deep is the love of Christ…” Ephesians 3:18 (NIV) Blessings!

Thank you, brother. I apologize for the slow reply. I’ve been wrapping up my school year.
It truly is its own reward to minister in nursing homes. The residents are so appreciative! Blessings to you and yours!

You are right! And the Holy Spirit makes the whole universe small enough for God to tap us on the shoulder. We just have to be ready to listen.

We truly live in a small world, David, where our lives intersect and we can pass along love, joy, care, and loving kindness to others. Blessings!

What’s amazing is it’s not just a theory. Folks have tested the depths of God’s love and found it’s always deep enough.

Thanks, Pastor Pete! I failed to mention that you edited this article, making it better.
I wrote it for Sunshine, but it works well for my personal blog as well.

Thanks for sharing that story. The hope we have really is bigger than any pit anyone may find themselves in. That’s a wild promise that would take a mighty big God to fulfill. In this, our imaginations are small compared to the eventual reality of eternities merciful blessings.

I’ve had experiences like the one you mentioned: residents who seemed unresponsive, who perked up and sang along. It’s a double blessing to minister at nursing homes—for residents and singers alike.

There’s no greater ministry than to minister to those in nursing homes. My husband and I have done that for years. One woman would be brought into the room and appear to be totally unaware of her surroundings. But when we sang an old hymn “Power in the Blood” she would come awake, sit up and sing. As soon as the song was over, she would lapse back into a blank look. That song clearly meant a great deal to her. God bless you for your ministry to those who are often forgotten.

Wow, Majik! Thank for sharing the story behind the quote. Corrie is the most famous (and remembered) Ten Boom today, but her sister (and whole family) were also part of the story.
    I appreciate your contribution, Majik.
    Blessings, my brother.

    Excellent, David.

You end your post with the thing that Corrie ten Boom always told her audiences in meetings and her books, “There is no pit so deep, that God’s love is not deeper still.” She had actually learned this truth from her older sister Betsie who lived it out before she died in the Nazi concentration camp where Corrie should have died too but for God’s miraculous plan for Corrie’s later years when she became a missionary “Tramp for the Lord” after World War II. Tramp for the Lord: ten Boom, Corrie: 9780875089867: Amazon.com: Books

Here’s the beauty from ashes story that I found in a post on the web.

Betsie and Corrie would eventually go on together to the women’s concentration camp Ravensbrück. Together they faced deprivation, miserable living conditions, long hours standing at attention, and the daily agony of cruel injustice. Once a guard beat Betsie during a work detail. Corrie’s anger flashed, but Betsie urged her to not retaliate, even as the blood oozed from her wound: “‘Don’t look at it, Corrie. Look at Jesus only.’”

Months into their captivity, the sisters learned the identity of the Dutch man who had colluded with the Nazis and betrayed the Ten Booms, and Corrie brimmed with hatred for the man who had brought such suffering literally to their doorstep. Her father was dead because of this man, and it was because of that traitor that Betsie was slowly dying. At last Corrie could no longer keep her anger bottled in. She turned to Betsie one night, asking,

    “‘Doesn’t it bother you?’

“‘Oh yes, Corrie! Terribly! I’ve felt for him ever since I knew—and pray for him whenever his name comes into my mind.’”

As Betsie grew weaker, she kept insisting that she and Corrie had work to do after the war. She planned to have rehabilitation homes – with green paint and window boxes – for concentration camp survivors as well as for people who had helped the Nazis.

“They placed the stretcher on the floor and I leaned down to make out Betsie’s words, ‘…must tell people what we have learned here. We must tell them that there is no pit so deep that He is not deeper still. They will listen to us, Corrie, because we have been here.’”

I’m sure it was a real blessing for this woman to see you, and to be reminded of her earlier life. She would have felt the love from you, and from the other musicians, too. God bless you for this very important work you are doing.
