My fondest childhood Fourth of July memories involve spending the holiday making homemade ice cream at my grandparent’s farm.
Starting mid-morning, my aunts, uncles, and cousins arrived, with the crunch of tires on the gravel driveway, and every family brought an ice cream freezer. For those who are not familiar, making homemade ice cream means putting the liquid ingredients inside a metal cylinder, packing ice and rock salt around it, and then churning the chilled mixture until it thickens.
Back in the 1970’s, everyone else had an electric model but not grandmother. She still used one with an old-fashioned hand crank, so, we grandchildren got to churn. As the ice cream took form, the longer we cranked, the harder it got. Now I know why my brothers and cousins all made themselves scarce—I cranked and cranked, until it felt like my little arms would fall off!
I would often call out, “Is it ready yet, grandmother? “But she would smile and answer, “No, David. Keep churning.” So, I did, until she had me stop to look inside. Then finally she would look up and tell me, “It’s ready!”
Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself. Just as he is pure.
1 John 3:2-3 NIV
Kind reader, wherever you are in your journey to heaven if you’re still breathing it’s too soon to quit. So, keep churning for Christ!
