Waiting for Ice Cream

My fondest childhood Fourth of July memories involve spending the holiday making homemade ice cream at my grandparent’s farm.

Starting mid-morning, my aunts, uncles, and cousins arrived, with the crunch of tires on the gravel driveway, and every family brought an ice cream freezer. For those who are not familiar, making homemade ice cream means putting the liquid ingredients inside a metal cylinder, packing ice and rock salt around it, and then churning the chilled mixture until it thickens.

Back in the 1970’s, everyone else had an electric model but not grandmother. She still used one with an old-fashioned hand crank, so, we grandchildren got to churn. As the ice cream took form, the longer we cranked, the harder it got. Now I know why my brothers and cousins all made themselves scarce—I cranked and cranked, until it felt like my little arms would fall off!

I would often call out, “Is it ready yet, grandmother? “But she would smile and answer, “No, David. Keep churning.” So, I did, until she had me stop to look inside. Then finally she would look up and tell me, “It’s ready!”

Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself. Just as he is pure.

1 John 3:2-3 NIV

Kind reader, wherever you are in your journey to heaven if you’re still breathing it’s too soon to quit. So, keep churning for Christ!

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

I’d forgotten about the sitting on the tub part, Mitch! Yes, sometimes it took two tween-agers for the job. Thanks for stopping by!

Me too, David! We’d take turns cranking the handle and sitting on the tub to hold it down.

Yes, the electric ones are much better.

I remember taking turns on cranking the homemade ice cream machine and then one year one with an electric motor appeared.

My parents had an electric model and I liked it much better, too. The only thing you had to do was resist the temptation to keep checking the ice cream to see if it was ready.

I remember the hand cranked ice cream makers but much preferred the electric ones. I’m sure your grandmother’s ice cream tasted better, David, because of all your hard work.

Taking turns was the key. Getting stuck churning ice cream alone made it not so fun. Thankfully, there was usually an uncle or aunt who intervened–before my little arms fell off. 😀

I haven’t seen one in years, but I bet you can find one in Amish country! It was fun, churning ice cream, but more so when taking turns with others. I did get stuck cranking away alone, once or twice. Thank you for stopping by, Priscilla. God Bless!

My parents had and used their wooden, hand-cranked ice cream maker as late as the 1990s. It was so fun that I tried to find one when my daughter was a youngster.

😊 Love the story! It does bring back lots of memories. There were 4 of us kids, we all had to take turns cranking. Also loved the spiritual application! Thanks for the reminders, David.

I’ve been thinking about that, Barb. For some reason, I can’t recall if I got the first taste. My mom’s mother was tough , but fair, so I imagine she gave me the first sample. That is, if my little arms weren’t too tired to hold a bowl!😍

I haven’t seen a hand-crank model in years, but my wife and I both remember them. If I found one today I’d convince a young person to do the churning: “It’s easy; you just turn the handle.”😀
A Happy Fourth to you and Terri!

“Keep churning for Christ!” Love it. This post evokes a ton of childhood memories chasing fireflies and waiting for the ice cream from an old hand cranked churn. Wonder if those are still around? Good post, brother.

I like that David : “Kind reader, wherever you are in your journey to heaven if you’re still breathing it’s too soon to quit. So, keep churning for Christ!” That is solid advice regardless of what life throws at us – hallelujah! God bless you and Nancy today 🙏🇺🇸
