Our Journey to Rescue Two Adorable Dogs

Nancy and I have always been dog lovers. So, after our beloved Mini-Schnauzer died, we talked about getting another dog (or two)—someday. This summer, I said, “I’m ready to find another Schnauzer.”

My wife had an idea: “We could adopt a couple of dogs from a rescue,” she said. “There are plenty out there who need homes.” I couldn’t logically disagree. After all, one of our last two dogs was a stray who showed up on our front porch.

We started our search in earnest, looking for animal rescues with smaller dogs—even if they weren’t Schnauzers. We found a few that seemed promising and completed adoption applications. A couple of days later one of the rescues contacted us; we were approved to adopt! The thing was, only one dog on our list was still available, and he was having tummy trouble that day and wasn’t up for a visit.

Sensing my frustration, the lady from the animal rescue, who is also on the board of directors, told us about a ten-month-old terrier mix she was fostering. “Her name is Honey. She’s a sweet dog who had some skin issues that are clearing up, so hasn’t been advertised yet. Would you like to meet her?”

Honey turned out to be just the kind of dog we wanted, so we brought her home, with the option to meet the dog who wasn’t feeling well, at an adoption event the next weekend. All we had to go on was a single picture of a little black mop of a dog named Quincey, but we wanted to see him in person.

We arrived outside a local PetSmart that Saturday morning a few minutes early, asking to meet the toy sized canine in the photo. “Quincey looks different than his picture,” said the same lady who helped us adopt the first dog. “We took him to a groomer, and they discovered something underneath all that fur.”

She turned around and took the dog out of his crate. “Here he is,” she said, putting him down in front of us. I could hardly believe my eyes, as I crouched down, the little dog who crawled right up in my lap was almost certainly a purebred Mini-Schnauzer!

After he and our new dog, Honey sniffed each other over without incident, I said to Nancy–trying to hide my excitement, “Make out the check.” There were other would-be adopters milling around, and I wasn’t about to let this little guy out of my lap until he was ours!

Kind reader, the circumstances are beyond coincidence. Sweet girl Honey was off-line, convalescing, and cute Quincey had been at the same adoption event a month earlier, ungroomed, and attracted little attention. There’s no doubt that both of our new dogs would have been gone before we had a chance to adopt them, had it not been for God’s perfect timing.

He has made everything beautiful in its time.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV)

He surely does. When I was a teenager, I patched up stray dogs and cats that came to our house. Later, when I entered full time ministry, I realized the animals were God’s training ground. He wanted to see if He could trust me to take care of His felines and canines before He trusted me with humans.

My brother and I had a hamster named Harvey. He got out of his cage one time and my mom found him in the vacuum cleaner. He crawled up the hose.
Honey already had her name. We decided to keep it because it fits her. She’s the color of honey 🍯 and is such a sweet dog.
Thanks for stopping by. How many cats do you have?

Thank you, Bridget. We suspect that Quincey was in a similar situation as Misty. Our vet thinks the little guy is about 8 years old. It’s obvious that someone took good care of him, as he knows how to walk on a leash, use a doggy door, and so many other things that tell us he used to being a pampered pooch!
Thanks for sharing your story. I will pray for your mom. Man! There’s a lot for you and your sisters to process. First your dad’s illness and promotion to heaven, and your mom is struggling.
It’s great that you were able to find Misty a good home in NJ.
Continued prayers for you and your husband and your family.

Oh my goodness. This brought tears to my eyes. Both of your pups look so sweet. A blessing for all four of you. And I especially love that one is a miniature schnauzer. My parents had a miniature schnauzer named Misty. After my father passed away, my mother could not properly care for Misty since she has dementia. (And no one in the family could keep her, for various reasons.) So when I was up in NY for the funeral, I contacted a mini-schnauzer rescue group. After gathering all vet papers and appropriate data, we were able to deliver Misty to a new home in NJ. It was sad to say goodbye, but we are so glad she is in a loving home.

I’m so glad to meet your puppies, brother David! All dogs have character, but little dogs seem to have the most. I love the idea of adopting, my wife and I will probably do the same one day when the time is right…and God will have just the one (or two) waiting for us.
    God bless you, brother!

Thank you for rescuing these adorable fur babies. I am a firm believer in adopting rescues and just added a little ball of energy to my own home, a solid gray kitten. My 10 year old kitties are keeping their distance for now, but seem to enjoy watching the antics of the newcomer. Blessings from Florence, SC Bette Cox
