The Modern Distraction: A Call to Lift Our Heads This Advent

A table full of young soldiers at the food court appeared to be praying together over their noon meal. “How refreshing,” I thought. “They are giving thanks to God.”

Tis the season.

As I drew closer, I realized they were all staring down at their phones. It was indeed reverence, but of a different sort.

However, if their commander had walked up to the table, the demeanor of the soldiers would have instantly changed. To a man they would have dropped their phones and snapped to attention, standing behind their chairs.

Lift up you heads, you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.

Psalm 24:9 (NIV)

Confession: If Jesus Christ arrived at the “food court” of my life, in either His first or second coming, He’d likely find me staring at my phone, unprepared.

Kind reader, as we begin this season of Advent, may we “Lift up our heads,” that the King of glory may come in!

🎶Come, Thou long-expected Jesus, born to set Thy people free.🎶

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️Prayers and Love.

We used to hear, “You won’t always have a calculator available” and now every phone has one.”

True. Every era has had its distractions, but a phone in almost every pocket or purse must be near the top of the list.

Technology does have its place but all too often it becomes a substitute for human contact.

Thank you, Bridget. It really did look like the whole table of young G.I.’s was bowing together in prayer. When I saw what it really was, my first reaction was not judgement but identification. “That could be me, and that has been me,” was my reaction.
    Blessings!

Thanks, brother. It’s great to be a part of an Advent post consortium. I think I used consortium correctly. 😊 I appreciate you heading this up. It’s a great idea! God Bless.

You paint a poignant and honest portrait of our contemporary society, David. And I thought, “me, too” when I read your confession. I’m afraid you’re absolutely right that most, if not all, of us would be looking at our screens, caught by surprise, should Christ return in our present age. Excellent ADVENT2025 reminder, David. Thanks for sharing and being an integral part of this celebration and observance.
