Grace with Skin On

By 7:30 AM, the Oklahoma sun was already making its intentions known.

Two teachers and I were out on the elementary school grounds, driving T-posts into the baking dirt and stringing caution tape to set the perimeter for our morning fun run. By 9:00 AM, when the kids lined up, I took my spot out on the course for crowd control. We had planned the schedule carefully to wrap up every grade level before noon, but heat doesn’t wait for a clock.

By 11:00 AM, the heat caught up with me. Lightheadedness and nausea set in—the familiar warning signs of heat exhaustion. I knew enough to listen to my body, step inside, eat some lunch, and cool off.

Feeling somewhat restored after noon, I stepped back out into the furnace to pull up T-posts and clear the course. I wanted to finish what I started. But thirty minutes in, my body gave out again. The weakness returned, sharp and non-negotiable.

I retreated to the air-conditioned sanctuary of the school library. Looking at one of the assistant librarians, I had to swallow my pride and say four words that leaders rarely like to utter:

“I can’t do it.”

I told her there was still work out on the field, but I couldn’t finish it.

What happened next was a quiet masterclass in grace. Without hesitation, she, another assistant, and our head librarian stepped out into the oppressive heat. They picked up the remaining barricades, gathered the heavy cones, and put everything back where it belonged.

Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their efforts. For if either falls, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to lift him up… A cord of three strands is not easily broken. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

Kind Reader, have you experienced something similar–where others stepped in to do what you could not? It feels like God’s amazing grace with skin on!

Thank you for reading. Prayers and love.

Letting others help, asking for help, not so easy at times but part of being a team

Thanks Dave. I really get it. Sometimes asking for help feels like swallowing poison when in reality it’s the medicine I need the most.

It’s good to hear that there’s good people working in good schools all over the world, David – particularly when often what we hear is bad stuff.

Me too, Judy! It took me a minute to re-calibrate and realize I’ve had enough of too much. I had no idea my admission would lead to such helpful action by others! God is good.

You bet, brother Eric. Your post about accepting help was in the back of my mind, and then I got my own real life example!

I love that God didn’t give you the strength to finish but gave you helpers.

Excellent post, brother David! I’m so glad you chose wisely to admit your own limitations…and God was so faithful to provide helpers right on time!
Thanks for sharing this story, it encourages me to choose wisely and know my own limits. And thanks for the shout out!

I am grateful for the “all hands on deck” attitude of most at our school. We are a larger elementary with over 1200 students. It sometimes takes every adult to make things happen smoothly. Thank you for stopping by. One of our teachers is from England.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Her husband is in the British military. I told her about you and the seaside town of Lowestoft. She says she knows the area and it’s very nice. We also discussed the expensive beach cottages that come without electricity or plumbing. Back home in England, she was a head teacher for the lower elementary grades. Thank you for stopping by today. God bless.

Apart from the need for personal humility and a recognition of God’s grace, I love the fact that there are often good people who, without any fuss, just get on with stuff. I’m grateful that I’ve benefited from so many!

Thank you, Grant. Willingness to surrender is spot on, brother. I am a natural helper who struggles to let others help me. Yesterday was a great reminder from God that no one has to do it all themselves. It was a team effort to begin with!

An excellent lesson in humility, David. Aa study in replacing self-sufficiency with the willingness to surrender. Tough but doable.

Thank you for sharing this timely testimony post brother David. I am presently having to be humble and accept help from my family and church due to a cellulitis outbreak on my leg. Yes, God can use such things to help us see grace from others when we need it. God is Good! God bless you and Nancy today 🙏 🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
