Follow the Music

Opening one of my favorite devotional books on an early Friday morning, bleary eyed and half awake, I struggled to make sense of the words. “I’d better read that again,”

Have you been looking forward to talking about trusting Jesus, but instead He is asking you to show what trust is?

from Streams in the Desert

These were perfect words at the perfect time. I’d fallen asleep the night before, telling God how He’d chosen the wrong guy for the job. What started my doom-and-gloom rumination was a sticker a student showed me that same afternoon at school.

When I was a music teacher, it was easy to follow the music—literally. There was a lesson plan to follow, and follow it I did, one class period after another. But now, as an administrator my plans are often interrupted by, for lack of a better word, chaos.

My office phone rings, or the call comes over the walkie-talkie: “Mr. Duncan, there’s a parent waiting up front to see you.” Rest assured they haven’t come to thank me for my selfless service in the best interest of their child. At least it hasn’t happened yet.

Where pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

Proverbs 11:2 (NIV)

When someone is yelling at you, belittling you, and even threatening you, it’s tough to remove yourself from the equation—especially when you didn’t create the problem. Did you catch how many times I said “you” in the previous sentence? Five. And that’s one way pride gets in: “How dare someone speak to me like that! Just who do they think they are?”

Other people are responsible for their own actions, so don’t take aggression personally.

Chris Croft

Kind reader, you and I are responsible for our own actions, too. So, what does this have to do with following the music? It means trusting that the Grand Composer (God) writes music worth following—especially for those who have faith in Jesus Christ.

It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there is no favoritism.

Colossians 3:24b-25

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Thank you, Matt. Most days are good. It’s only moments that are a challenge.

Thank you. Most conversations I have with upset parents go reasonably well. Like today, I had two respectful interactions with two different parents.🤗

Oh, David, I feel that tension, “When someone is yelling at you, belittling you, and even threatening you, it’s tough to remove yourself from the equation.” But praise God that Jesus did and cried out, “Father, forgive them they know not what they do.”

The challenge is to remain dead to self and “in Christ” in the moment doing as He did.

I love your analogies, brother! The road of life is filled with potholes, and other drivers. Not to mention the fact that I can be a difficult driver, too. 🙃Relying on God to guide our emotional reactions is paramount.

Choosing the music, now there’s another thought. But contentment (especially in Christ) can still be found.
I appreciate your thoughts and prayers. Most of the time it’s not that bad. So, I should be more grateful. ☺️

Someone wise once said, “I’ve never seen a statue in honor of a critic.”
Maybe a little resistance makes us stronger? But a little is all I want.
Thanks for sharing, Majik! God Bless.

Nice when we can choose the music. Tough shoes to wear when we can’t. “I have learned to be content no matter what.” (paraphrased Philippians 4:11). Thanks Paul, we are working on it. At least you don’t have to worry about it any more.

Don’t envy you at all David. Prayers for strength and wisdom at your job. Rather you than me, for sure. Jesus is with you.

Life is certainly full of potholes in the road (there are lots in our Scottish roads too!), and hitting a pothole will certainly throw you off track and test your grace levels. I have had a couple of these potholes with a neighbour recently, and believe me it is hard not to have a blow out of my spiritual tyres. Thank you for your timely reminder that we need to lean on our Father in such times; He knows it all! God bless both you and Nancy today 🙏 🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

You are doing a wonderful job, David. It may feel thankless at times but we need people like you to be administrators, and deal with the tough stuff (and difficult people).
Thank you for sharing the quote: “Other people are responsible for their own actions, so don’t take aggression personally.” Very freeing. We live before an audience of one (God) and He alone is the one we answer to. He also knows the challenging things we have to put up with!!!

May God bless you for things you deal with and the way you handle them. It sounds like a very tough job. I pray the light you carry as a Christian will shine through and positively influence those you encounter. I like your point about trust and I can relate. Just this morning I was complaining to God about all the difficult tasks piled on my plate at work. Thank you for the reminder to trust Him and follow the music.🙏🎵

Thank you, Priscilla. The ones who take it out on me are far and few between, but the effect lingers. Most parents I interact with are both civil and respectful. Thank you for reading and commenting.

I love this post, David. And, funny enough, It sort of ties into mine that will come out this morning. It’s hard to hear God when someone’s music is blaring in your face. Yet, He’s there. In the midst of it all. Thank God for grace! Blessings brother—thanks for this timely post.
