Opening one of my favorite devotional books on an early Friday morning, bleary eyed and half awake, I struggled to make sense of the words. “I’d better read that again,”
Have you been looking forward to talking about trusting Jesus, but instead He is asking you to show what trust is?
from Streams in the Desert
These were perfect words at the perfect time. I’d fallen asleep the night before, telling God how He’d chosen the wrong guy for the job. What started my doom-and-gloom rumination was a sticker a student showed me that same afternoon at school.
When I was a music teacher, it was easy to follow the music—literally. There was a lesson plan to follow, and follow it I did, one class period after another. But now, as an administrator my plans are often interrupted by, for lack of a better word, chaos.
My office phone rings, or the call comes over the walkie-talkie: “Mr. Duncan, there’s a parent waiting up front to see you.” Rest assured they haven’t come to thank me for my selfless service in the best interest of their child. At least it hasn’t happened yet.
Where pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.
Proverbs 11:2 (NIV)
When someone is yelling at you, belittling you, and even threatening you, it’s tough to remove yourself from the equation—especially when you didn’t create the problem. Did you catch how many times I said “you” in the previous sentence? Five. And that’s one way pride gets in: “How dare someone speak to me like that! Just who do they think they are?”
Other people are responsible for their own actions, so don’t take aggression personally.

Kind reader, you and I are responsible for our own actions, too. So, what does this have to do with following the music? It means trusting that the Grand Composer (God) writes music worth following—especially for those who have faith in Jesus Christ.
It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there is no favoritism.
Colossians 3:24b-25
