As he drove up the ramp to a tall bridge, Dave was at an all-time low. Hopelessness and despair filled the car like a gloomy haze, fogging over his brittle mind. * “Why don’t you just pull over at the top and jump?” said an unreliable voice in his head.
Dave turned on the radio to distract himself from such a desperate thought. A favorite easy listening station cued up a hit by the soulful crooner, Aaron Neville- Everybody Plays the Fool.
🎶 Okay, so you’re heartbroken
You sit around mopin’
Cryin’ and cryin’
You say you even think about dying?
Well, before you do anything rash
Dig this!
Everybody plays the fool sometimes…🎶
The guy behind the wheel (me) couldn’t believe his ears! God used a seemly random song on the radio to send just the right message at precisely the right time. (Stop taking yourself so seriously, David!)
I kept driving that day, off the bridge and into an unsettled future. But one thing was certain. God had directly intervened at a pivotal moment.
Neither height nor depth, nor anything else in creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:39 (NIV) – emphasis mine
I understand Paul isn’t talking about tall bridges and unbalanced psychological states here, but it fits. Another verse that took on a fresh meaning is, “Love is as strong as death.” — Song of Songs 8:6b (NIV)
God’s love is more powerful than anything we can imagine! (Ephesians 3:20) That’s what I learned that day on the bridge. He has the GPS coordinates for every human heart. Yours and mine too.
Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence?
Psalm 139:7 (NIV)
God’s Love is Stronger!
*If you struggle with thoughts of self harm, please seek out a professional counselor or even a trusted friend. I did, and it made a big difference.

🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Thank you. Just had a heart to heart talk with a friend today. For so long, the weight just gets heavier and living seems less optimistic . I agree, we need professional help, my appt is Sept however. I’m hoping for the best. For now it’s, prayers and finding solutions that kind of work in the past. I appreciate this post. God bless.

Dave,
I forgot to say I like the picture you chose at the end–like God is looking at us and giving us love.

So glad you listened to the song God put on the radio at just that moment. The devil would love to have us act on his impulses. BTW: That song is a favorite of mine, because it spoke to me, in a minor moment, probably when I was feeling sorry for myself.
So thankful God reaches out to us in our major dark moments (like yours) and minor dark moments (like mine). God sees, God cares, God acts.
Bless you for sharing this.

Thank you, brother! I am grateful for our friendship as well. Yes, like many others, I have been to rock bottom. And it was there where I realized anew that Jesus is the ROCK! I tell my story of rescue and renewal often, because I simply MUST give Almighty God full credit. Blessings to you, Susan and family.

Thank you for your heartfelt testimony David. Our Father God will honour your honesty and bravery in this post.
Such moments of despair would have you think it is only you, but that is a lie of the devil. God is with us, even through a radio station. I thank God for you often brother, you (and your writing) are a great source of wisdom and encouragement to me, and many others I am sure. May our Father God bless you brother.

Truth! God has a plan for each of us—one that even the most traumatic experiences cannot stop. The Lord uses wounded healers. And that’s good, because we are ALL wounded in some way. 🙏 for your continued recovery. God Bless!

Thank you for sharing. I have been through a similar situation — trauma so severe that it seems it will never end. Yet I can attest that God is stronger; His grace and love are greater than any trial. He has saved me in so many ways. I have been blessed by two amazing therapists and the prayers of many who helped walk me back from the edge. Your blog is a testimony that God has more work for us to do — more stories to tell about our Lord and savior. Blessings.

Quite a share David. We just lost a boy who only listened to his pain. Funeral yesterday. The sorrow for the lost and from the lost is is so great. The hope gained in the love of God is really big when one stands on that mountain.

I’m glad too, Sally! It’s important to remember the ups AND downs of our lives, as they often serve as “spiritual markers.” My emotional roller coaster is more like a kiddie carnival ride these days. But I will always remember how God reached out to me during a moment of despair. God Bless!

Thank you for sharing your story as well. Like you said, our desperate moments should not be swept under the rug. I MUST give credit to God for His intervention. Perhaps our stories will encourage others that it’s ok to have “feet of clay.” Blessings!

Years ago when I had made a mess of my life, I had similar thoughts. I am so thankful that Jesus brought the both of us through the hard moments. I love how God can use something like a song we have heard many times before to tug at us. Thank you for sharing this. It is important to talk about, but usually it is swept under the rug. God bless you, friend.

These days some may call this a “God wink”, and like my “Friday Funnies”, these moments are all around. All we have to do is look. I am so glad you kept driving when you were on that bridge. I only know you from our blogging, but you are a positive light in this world, and I am glad you shine in mine.
