Mister Left Lane

It was 1957, when my dad and his older brother left rural New Mexico and drove west, all the way to Los Angeles, California. The trip, on the recently finished Interstate 10, went smoothly–until they hit the suburbs of L.A.

Six lanes of bumper-to-bumper traffic, with countless on and off ramps, was petrifying! The two “country boys” finally made it downtown to pick up my aunt Betty at the bus station.

Everyone was exhausted, but there was no money for a hotel. So, they turned back for home—my uncle Bill behind the wheel. With sister sitting up front, my dad quickly fell asleep in the back seat.

It was around 10 o’clock at night, so traffic was lighter on the interstate. They were making good time. But, somewhere in East L.A., the car slowed down; dad woke up with them sitting at a stop light. Somehow, uncle Bill had wandered off the interstate and was driving on an access road through a high crime area.

Dad helped my uncle find an I-10 on ramp and soon they were safely back on the motorway. But, ten minutes later, it happened again!  He drifted from the right lane onto a side road, lined with broken streetlights and graffiti covered buildings.

Once again, they found their way back on the main thoroughfare. This time my dad made sure his brother was in the far-left lane. “Stay over here!” he pointed, before falling back asleep. The rest of the trip was uneventful; the three made it to a friend’s house in Arizona, and back to New Mexico the next day.

Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm.

Proverbs 4:24-26 (NIV)

There are countless off ramps, on the bustling highway of life. And, in my forty plus years as a follower of Christ, I’ve taken a few of these wrong exits.

How about you, kind reader?  Have you ever found yourself at a proverbial red light on an access road in a dangerous part of town?  I have. And it makes me want to be a “Mister Left Lane.”😇

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God

Hebrews 12:2 (NIV)

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Hmm…Seems I had two major right lane exits before I felt a firm Hand on the wheel saying, “Stay over here!” ❤️☺️

Love the illustration David. I too have wrong lane stories that lead to dangerous places.
Sometimes I miss life’s signs. I do appreciate them being pointed out by someone I trust.

You are welcome, David. It explains much to know your dad had driven there. God blessings in abundance to you!

I didn’t take the words to explain, but my dad drove all the way to L.A. to begin with. I assume he woke up, at some point, and helped my uncle and aunt.
Thank you for sharing. God Bless!

Amen, Bridget. We must be willing to listen to the Holy Spirit and get back on the main road where we belong.

Thank you for sharing, Jo. It totally skipped my mind that many folks in the world drive on the left, not right.

It’s all back the front down under, so it’s staying in the right lane for me if I don’t want to exit! 😆
That said, my husband and I have driven the LA interstate…and it was a nerve wracking experience indeed! Cars zooming past us on the “wrong” side, and us trying to merge left to exit the freeway then realising our exit was actually coming up on the right. Automatic muscle memory is a funny thing. 🥴

Well, David, here’s a wonderful prayer song by Rend Collective attached to another Lousy Haiku. Enjoy both, Bro! https://lousyhaiku.blog/2023/07/28/lousy-haiku-90/

Love this analogy. I too have gotten off at the wrong exits. I’m so thankful God patiently guides us back to the right path, if we allow Him to 🙌🙏

What an illustration to use for our life, getting off the freeway onto dangerous territory. Just wondering why your father, didn’t take a turn at driving or at staying awake to help keep his brother awake? I think God’s angels were busy that night, keeping Uncle Bill awake in the left lane. It was certainly love for Aunt Betty that caused her brothers to drive from New Mexico to L.A, and back without a break!

I’d never heard of either, Majik. I’m actually a classical music lover, who leads a rather sheltered life. I read your haiku, but did not watch the video yet. But I will. Blessings, brother!

Thank you, brother. I don’t always know the UK terminology. Andy B told me what we call an interstate is a motorway, so I threw that in. I didn’t know about filter lanes.
Thank you for reading and commenting. 🙏May the Lord bless you and Susan and family, as well.

I love your use of the picture of “off ramps” in our spiritual journey. We call them filter lanes in the UK, but of course they do exactly the same job. Brother Bruce often talks about “off ramps” too. May we keep our eyes fixed upon Jesus our Shepherd, as He guides us on the Way Home. God bless you and Nancy this weekend brother 🙏

Glad you do, David. I’d never heard of Gungor before today when I saw his and his wife’s music on YouTube when I was listening to some Rend Collective who my wife and I really love. Rend Collective is completely orthodox Christianity. Michael Gungor maybe not so much . . . but WOW what beautiful music. Had you ever heard of either Rend Collective or Gungor? If Michael Gungor has taken a wrong turn on the freeway of faith, let’s just pray that our Good Shepherd goes and finds him too, huh!

Correct. This is where my metaphor wears a little thin.☺️ The idea is to stay in the fast lane with God, and not take those pesky off ramps to nowhere.

If I could “lose my salvation,” I’d have done it so many times over. I could do without all the pain and bruising I cause(d) myself by straying from the fold though. Here’s my latest bit on that thought. https://lousyhaiku.blog/2023/07/29/lousy-haiku-103/

I hear you, Majik. Taking road trips with my dad were the best. These were usually short day trips, but a few long-hauls.

Thank you for pointing out that God is an equal opportunity employer (boss). He doesn’t automatically fire folks who lose their way on company time.

    🙏His best to you, brother.

I was born in 1957, and I remember traveling across country with our family. Our Dad was an NCO in the United States Air Force, and our Mom was a stay-at-home “homemaker,” as they were called in those days. On long distance trips, we usually could only afford to get one room in a clean but cheap motel whenever our Dad was too tired to keep driving through the night. Thanks for the memories.

More to your metaphor, some Christians find it easier to stay on the “straight and narrow,” and some Christians are so grateful for a Good Shepherd who will leave the 99 sheep and search for the one lost sheep who strayed until He finds that frightened sheep and brings him or her home. I should know. I am one of those straying sheep that the 99 gossip about and who the Shepherd gently reproves too.

So true! Uncle Bill had no idea he’d left the main road. Your comment brings to mind the scripture that says to, “Put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make not provision for the flesh.” In other words, we need to stay in the lane farthest away from sin.

Thanks, Crystal. As I recall, my aunt Betty was estranged from her first husband, and decided to leave him. She met my dad and uncle at the bus station to avoid a possible fist fight, as her brothers were quite protective of her.

I’ve been at many “red lights” on the road of Christian living. And, it’s so important to have a “backseat driver” to hold me accountable.

Consider me signed up as “Mrs. Left Lane” please and thank you! What a great reminder and having driven all of 48 states as a truck driver, we went into sketchy neighborhoods, and were grateful when we got back on the interstate too!
