Is the Sky Really Falling?

In the early 1990’s, social psychologist Roy Baumeister began exploring the negativity bias–the widely accepted belief that bad has a stronger impact on people than good. His team conducted extensive research, hoping to find situations where a single positive circumstance was actually stronger than a negative one.

They couldn’t find any.

In fact, Baumeister and his colleagues discovered that negative life events are typically three to five times stronger than positive ones. In other words, it takes four compliments to make up for one put down.

He lays it all out in his 2019 book, The Power of Bad.

Here’s my favorite take away: our brains are hard-wired to focus on bad, but the rational mind can take this in stride by finding the good.

Baumeister recommends a positivity ratio of 4 to 1 (4 good to 1 bad).

Finding the good isn’t a new idea; it’s as least as old as the 1913 novel, Pollyanna. In the book, a young orphan named Pollyanna uses the glad game to cope with the circumstances and sorrows of her life.

Here’s how to play:

Always look for something to be glad about in any situation.

This makes sense. It’s why gratitude journals are popular, while keeping an ingratitude journal is not.

Let’s take it all the way back to the first century. The apostle Paul reminded the Christians in Rome that God uses everything for the good of those who love and serve Him (Romans 8:28).

Child, I’ve got this. It’s all good.

Finally, brothers, Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

    My daughter has practiced the 3 to 1 with my grandchildren. I guess the odds are up and stats change! Positive input in conversation is much needed. Well, when you think of it, conversation is much needed in families!

    I’m a perpetually positive person, Deborah. And it drains me to be around folks who aren’t. We each have a place in the Body of Christ–no matter what our spiritual gifts. God can use anyone, including you and me, sister!

    Oh, David, Pollyanna was my favorite book as a child and can still hear my grandmother reading it to me. I have often been mocked or bullied over the years for being a “Pollyanna” as if that were a bad thing. So many seem to prefer to focus on the negative side of things. It wore me down at certain jobs. Thank you for these stats that offer understanding and for the beautiful reminder that my life is a testimony— God does indeed use ALL things …! And that’s so worth sharing.

    Those statistics are quite eye opening David! I love the reference to Pollyanna. It was one of my favorite Disney movies as a child and later I read the book to my girls when they were in elementary school.

    I’m generally a positive person, but there are times when the “awful-izing” takes over.

    Just being aware of the trend of my thoughts helps. God is an optimist, and I want to be too.

    I went to a counselor one time in my college years. I poured out my woes to him. His conclusion: “well, you could try being more positive but I don’t think it would work”.
    I know I need more positive than negative to be somewhat balanced.

    This is an excellent post!
    Pollyanna remains a favorite book and movie. Many have never seen the movie and there are two versions of it both well done one following the book a bit closer. I own both on DVD. Each time I watch either I’m freshly challenged to make a life commitment to play, no live, the “Glad Game” in hopes of off-setting evil and being a beacon of light in a dark place.

    I have folks in my town who tell me, almost bragging, about what they’ve said to someone else on social media, and I’m horrified! So I do everything I can to counterbalance that with spreading good everywhere I can. I’ve heard about carbon offsets, so now I’m doing “evil offsets!”

    David, I love this post, of course. Though I do question the 4 to 1 ratio. Sometimes, I think a negative comment from someone weighs much heavier than that. The quote from Philippians is the perfect guide to live with gratitude.

    I finally found out my biopsy results yesterday. There’s less than a 5 % chance that my thyroid nodule is malignant. There is still follow up to be done, but I’m taking this as a positive.

    Thank you again, David, for a soul-satisfying and, even, soul-saving post. I’m currently in therapy for work-related vicarious trauma, and the therapy is helping, but I know from experience, as well as from what I believe to be the very Word of God, that what you just wrote about is going to be far more helpful for my battered psyche, which, thank God, He is holding together in His Hands! PS: Where can I get some of those wrist bands to remind me when I forget to “FIND THE GOOD?”

    I’ve read quite a bit recently about us having a negativity bias so – yes – we have to choose to work at looking for the good. But there is always something good, and attitude matters so much. Thanks for emphasizing this.

    This is amazing brother! I have heard about this before while I was in the UK. As someone who works in customer services I know that a bad customer stays in the mind longer than a good one, but I have trained myself to focus more on the good as you said in this post!
