Lost and Found

Back in the mid-nineties, the men from my church attended a huge Christian conference at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis, Indiana. The venue was packed with over 63,000 men!  Our church van load of guys was safely seated inside, but we were missing someone—our pastor’s son, Todd.

Here’s the predicament: Pastor Ron had a ticket for Todd, but his son was somewhere outside, unable to get in. Now, this was back before everyone had a phone in their pocket.

Just before the event started, Ron stands up and says, “I’m going outside to find Todd.”

And I think, “Are you serious? There’s no way!” But off went dad, disappearing into the shadows to search for his son.

Wouldn’t you know, about twenty minutes later, here comes Pastor Ron with Todd.😳 This time I verbalized my thoughts, “How on earth did you do that?!”  “I prayed,” says Ron. “God, help me find him.”

Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear.

Isaiah 59:1 (NIV)

The next verse says it’s our sins that separate us from God, He hides His face and covers His ears, when we willfully turn away from him.

It wasn’t sin that separated Todd from his dad, and the rest of the group, but it’s a good picture of our relationship with God. He’s the divine “ticket holder” who comes looking for us. And, like the Apostle Paul told the curious philosophers in Athens, “He is not far from each one of us.” (Acts 17:27b)

Kind reader, please don’t believe those who say God is no longer in the finding business. The creator of the universe is not indifferent to His creation. Our Heavenly Father still loves, searches for, and saves those who’ve gone astray.

If you remember nothing else from this post, please hang on to this: His heart is big enough to love you. No. Matter. What.

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ Prayers and love.

What a great experience story of an everyday truth, especially when someone “trusts” that truth and puts it into practice. I am sometimes guilty of only thinking I believe some of those truths of God and push the panic button (like the disciples in the boat in the storm).

🤣 Good to know others get those forgetful times I call “senior” moments.

I just realized I only replied to your comment in my mind, Manette Kay. 😊 Yes, one lost sinner whose heart
turns toward God makes all heaven rejoice!

I have a feeling Adam and Eve (after the fall) wouldn’t have looked for God , either. He came looking for them. I’m glad our loving Heavenly Father comes looking for us, as well! Thanks for stopping by! God Bless.

I’m glad God pursues us. I know if the pursuing was up to me, I’d fall short. Great anecdote, David. You draw us a good picture of what it looks like to be loved and sought by the Lord.

Your observations concerning phoning a friend take this post in a whole new direction, Beth! I remember speaking by phone with one of the leaders in my church. We addressed a mutual problem, but I still felt anxious about it when the call ended. I sat there in my office thinking, “What am I going to do?” when, suddenly, I felt much better. A follow up conversation with the same friend revealed he’d prayed for me at that exact moment! God used a prayer, not a phone call, to calm my troubled mind. My friend knew only God could help me, and so he prayed. Amazing!

As always David, you make such powerful Biblical illustrations. I’ve prayed that verse from Isaiah many a time. What a comfort it is to know that his arm is never too short. Your post did get me pondering about how many prayers I’ve have failed to pray in this last decade because my phone is on hand and I can just grab it and phone a friend rather than dial up my heavenly father. Sigh!

Then as I was researching for my “Bread and Water” Bible study for the Women’s group, I found where Elisha also multiplied bread so everyone could be fed, and there was leftovers too! Sound familiar?!

I love that story, and the one right after it–where someone unknowingly poisons a pot of stew. Elisha does something and prays and nobody dies. Yes, God is still in the impossibility business! Thank you for stopping by, sister!

All prayers no matter how big or small are important to Him. I just read about the guy chopping wood and the ax head fell off the handle into the water, and he was worried because it was borrowed. And Elisha helped and the handle floated to the surface. Nothing is impossible for God!

Thank you, Bridget! Pastor Ron’s first decision, when faced with a dilemma, was to pray. I’ll always remember this, and sometimes do the same. I appreciate your reading and commenting. God Bless

I’ve seen that picture! It’s an illustration from the book of Revelation, where Jesus says He “stands at the door and knocks.” The handle on the inside means only we can let Him in. This is a great thought to add to the post. Thank you, and God bless.

Great post! It brought back to my mind, an image my Grandma shared with me that has always stuck with me. It was of Jesus knocking on a door, and the handle of the door being inside.
