Holding On

Of the once lush growth, only a few green leaves remain—and maybe one folded flower. So, it was quite a surprise to look out the window, on the fourth day of November, and see a lone butterfly flitting around our honeysuckle,

The first hard freeze happened ten days ago; so how did my little yellow friend survive?

The unruly crape myrtle still has plenty of leaves, but the small, lily-white flowers, smiling from the middle of the shrub, aren’t supposed to be there, either.

Their wilted petals should’ve been scattered by the wind weeks ago.

Do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised.

Hebrews 10:35-36 (NIV)

Sometimes miracles happen in plain sight. A butterfly and flowers—in the middle of autumn—remind us that God sustains life, no matter the season.

Faith never works as easily as when our natural prospects fail.

George Mueller

Kind reader, thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Yes, the little guy/gal did blend in. It was the unmistakable flitting around that caught my eye first. Funny, I think God sustains nature, and sometimes struggle to believe he does the same for us. Thanks for reading and commenting. God Bless!

I’m astounded at the coloring of that butterfly, almost didn’t see him/her. Our crape myrtle puts out pink flowers. Great post. And yes He does.

Yes he does: in a “still, small voice, that’s easy to miss—if we’re not careful. I’m glad I was looking when it mattered most.

Thank you kindly, Simply B! His strength is perfect, especially when our strength is God. With less of us, there’s more room for Him. Thanks for your prayers. I am grateful you stopped by. His best to you and yours.

Mueller most definitely practiced what he preached. His total reliance on God, to provide for the orphanage under his care, is an inspiration! Thank you for reading and commenting, friend. God Bless!

What an encouraging post. You’ve been in my prayers. What a great message God gave you through the butterfly and flowers and scripture from Hebrews. Thank you for passing that message on to those of us who need the encouragement also. God does sustain life, no matter the season. Hold on!!

David, just a couple days ago, I saw a yellow butterfly just like that one here in Big Cypress. I’ve only noticed one, but I sure thought of and prayed for you.

Thank you for sharing the story about Aaron’s rod. God took care of His people for 40 plus years in the desert—where there was little food and water. It’s a good thing the Lord caters! Blessings, my brother.

Thank you David for sharing these beauties with us, what a gorgeous butterfly indeed! Yes, our Father God is the Creator and is in full charge of all things; He can overcome the rules of nature bringing life in the least expected time and place. Your post reminded me of Aaron’s rod:
Now on the next day Moses went into the tent of the testimony; and behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi had sprouted and put forth buds and produced blossoms, and it bore ripe almonds.
    — Numbers 17:8
God bless you and your family today brother 🙏

You’ve inspired me to write a follow up post about this very idea! I’m basing it around the scripture, “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10

Thank you, again. Have a wonderful weekend!

I love your line of thinking here, Pastor Pete! In any season, we can often do, and be more than we think—especially under the influence of God’s grace. Blessings!

Maybe the butterfly is too young to know his life is impossible and the crape myrtle too old to care what everyone else thinks they can do. Isn’t our God of grace amazing?

Isn’t that beautiful …. and such a helpful metaphor for life. Sometimes we need to give ourselves permission to be dormant for a while. It’s the right and best thing to do.

Yes, it’s wonderful how God sustains us! I read last night, that butterflies are able to survive cold temperatures by going into a dormant state. Then, when the sun comes out, and it warms up, they are able to fly again. This is also a good metaphor for life: be still and conserve energy until conditions improve.

I love how the Lord uses nature to grab our attention and then the Holy Spirit brings a scripture to mind that remind us of important truths like you pointed out in this post- “A butterfly and flowers—in the middle of autumn—remind us that God sustains life, no matter the season.”
