Often Wrong, but Never in Doubt

A soothing voice comes from the glowing iPad, โ€œPlease listen until the end before answering.โ€

The impatient first grader doesnโ€™t wait. โ€œTap, tap, tap.โ€ He sounds like a young woodpecker trying to drill through the screen.

I frown, from a few chairs away, knowing the stakes are high. โ€œSmack.โ€ Thatโ€™s the sound of my palm softly hitting my forehead. ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

The student is taking an early literacy test, one that will indicate whether heโ€™s a non-reader, emergent reader, or early reader. Itโ€™s important that his teacher knows his true potential; and, if he answers too quickly, she may not.

Sometimes, God gives me directions, as well. And, before He even finishes, Iโ€™m tapping my favorite answer. I wonder, does the Lord smack Himself on the forehead when His children donโ€™t listen? I doubt it. He knew we were gonna do that.๐Ÿ˜‘

I once bragged to my older brother, a mechanical engineer, about the do-it-yourself prowess of my nephew, his son. โ€œCareful,โ€ he said. โ€œHeโ€™s often wrong, but never in doubt.โ€

In contrast, my Scottish blogger friend, Alan Kearns, talks about coaching novice players at the local chess club. Many of them are too quick to make their next move. So, he tells them, โ€œSit on your hands.โ€

Kind reader, perhaps the solution to being spiritually wrong, but never in doubt, is to sit on our hands.

Be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.

Psalm 27:14 (NIV)

But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)

Thank you for reading.  ๐Ÿ™โค๏ธprayers and love.

Thanks, Dean. Iโ€™ve gotten ahead of Godโ€™s plan before, and it wasnโ€™t pretty. Waiting is hard, but itโ€™s better than really messing things upโ€”through my own efforts. Godโ€™s best to you, brother!

Amazing post brother and a great way to put it โ€œsit on your handsโ€ – this means we must be fully trusting in God.

Thank you, brother, for the additional background on where โ€œsit on your handsโ€ came from.
Iโ€™ve recently heard some scripture study methods that involve slowing down, rereading the passage, and meditating on what it means. As Iโ€™ve done this, different words stick out and add more meaning to the passage.
Thank you for being a regular reader and commenter. I am grateful for our friendship in the Lord. God Bless!

Excellent post as always brother; I love your illustrations from your school work…they always make things so clear.
I must own up that the origin of the advice “sit on your hands!” came from an old chess friend called George Pyrich, which both my son and I followed in our chess apprenticeship at the club. I think it would be a good thing to apply when reading the Psalms, rather than speeding through the pages…meditate on them!
God bless you my dear brother, and happy thanksgiving tomorrow! ๐Ÿ™

Youโ€™re welcome, Bridget. Jumping too quickly is almost a proverb with me. Seeking God and seeing the answer sometimes takes more than a minute. Happy Thanksgiving, and God Bless!

Agreed, Andy B! Itโ€™s all to easy and natural to give God a boost, but He really doesnโ€™t need it. ๐Ÿ™His best to you and the whole bunch.

I totally understand your predicament, Majik, and wrestle with the same issue myself. I get what Betty said about praying hands, but Iโ€™d be quick to unclasp them, to push buttons repeatedly, the same as you.
Thanks for stopping by, brother! Happy Thanksgiving, and God Bless!

Thank you. I tend to think and act fast, too. I often need to force myself to slow down. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day in the USA. So, lโ€™m already dialing back a bit.
Iโ€™m grateful you read and also shared your thoughts today. God Bless!

Thank you for this reminder. Sometimes we jump too quick. May we learn to sit on our hands and seek God first.

We could all do with sitting on our hands every once in a while – to give God the honour of providing for us without our ‘help’.

    Great post

With my ADHD, sitting on my hands is more practical than folding them in prayer.

I like the idea of prayer, but if I’m not gonna move that chess piece too quickly, I’m gonna need to handcuff my prayer folded hands behind my back!

Oh, that is such a good analogy. I am one of those fast thinking, fast acting people and I know from experience it would be better to take things more slowly and carefully.

Always encouraging, David! But perhaps I can suggest, that rather than sit on our hands, we fold them in prayer. ๐Ÿ™‚ Have a great week ahead!
