But Wait, There’s More!

Does anyone else remember those old commercials for the Ginsu knife? I must have been ten or eleven years old the first time I saw one.

A guy uses a Ginsu to cut through nails, a soda can, and a radiator hose, then picks up a tomato and slices it paper thin.

If only I’d been old enough for a credit card back then.🙁 They sold me with the radiator hose. Forget food, this ornery boy just wanted to tear stuff up! 🤓

But the coolest part of the commercial was how they kept sweetening the deal:

“This surgical grade steel knife can be yours for only $19.95. But wait, there’s more! For a limited time only, we’ll double your order. That’s right, two knives for the price of one! Just pay separate shipping and handling. But that’s not all! Order within the next ten minutes, and we’ll include a deluxe Ginsu paring knife for free.”

A countdown timer appeared on the screen…..

The Apostle Paul has a, “But wait, there’s more!” moment in his letter to the Romans. It happens about half way through chapter five. After highlighting the fact that God demonstrates His love by sending Christ to die for a bunch of unworthy sinners (Romans 5:8), Paul starts dropping exclamation points like a full-on salesman.

Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through Him! For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved by His life! Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. – Romans 5:9-11 (NIV) (emphasis mine)

Romans 5:9-11 (NIV) (emphasis mine)

It’s clear, Paul is excited about the fact that salvation through the blood of Christ is so much more than an insurance policy. Jesus is both the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2), and we are called to follow in His steps (1 Peter 2:20-21)

It’s fine to ask ourselves, “What would Jesus do?”, but even better to investigate (through the gift of the scriptures) what He actually did! Plus, the guiding presence of the Holy Spirit means we can literally have the mind of Christ (Philippians 2:5). Because of these blessings, and many more, we are actually able to walk as Jesus did (1 John 2:6).

This must be the kind of ‘much more’ Paul was thinking about when he kept sweetening the deal in Romans chapter five. Hallelujah!

By the way, did you know Ginsu knives are still being made and sold today? After forty something years, you’d think everybody already has one–“Their very own piece of indestructible surgical grade cutlery that never needs sharpening. All for the low price of $19.95.

But wait, there’s more!

Whoever claims to live in Him must live as Jesus did.

1 John 2:6 (NIV)

Thank you for reading, kind reader. 🙏❤️

I SO remember those “Wait … but there’s more” commercials!!! Just thinking about them makes me laugh. But the so-much-more that is found in Christ is definitely worth paying attention to, and going after. Thanks for another great illustration, David.

I remember Ron Popeil! His rotisserie oven pitch was the best: “Set it and forget it.”
There’s another post in there, sister.😀

I just read that scripture, from Ephesians, this morning! I think the address is chapter three, verse twenty and twenty-one.

I remember those commercials. Lots of skepticism on my part. As a kid I had a pocketknife which was dulled by anything I did. The parallel spiritually is so rich. I read yesterday “eye has not seen nor ear heard the things which God has prepared….so the deal is much sweeter than we can even imagine.
What a great deal…and it’s free to sign on with an eternal guarantee

And the Popeil Pocket Fisherman, and then he also came up with a way to look like you had a full head of hair, it was a can of spray paint, the color of your hair, to cover your bald spots! Even better, your Ginsu knife still cuts after all these years!

I like how you brought up the true cost of discipleship, Majik. God does all the heavy lifting, in saving us from ourselves, and we then work out that salvation—ideally with “fear and trembling,” as Paul also says.
Thank you for reading and commenting. God Bless!

Thanks for doing the work for me, David. I didn’t have much time. Some of us retired folk are working today.

Good post then, David, and good re-post now, because we all need to be reminded.
Most of us come into our everlasting life with Jesus Christ as Savior “for the low price of $19.95,” and it takes a long time . . . maybe even a lifetime . . . after that until we realize the real life is found in also obeying Jesus Christ as Lord, which costs us everything, but it’s still the best deal that ever was or ever will be!

Thank you, Priscilla. As I recalled, I had help from my pastor, who preached one Sunday on the passage from Paul. He said it was a “But wait, there’s more” moment in scripture. My pastor also brought up infomercials that sell products. I immediately thought of my trusty Ginsu knife. So, I was inspired to write this, but the wit was all me—for better or worse. 😊. Thank you for being a faithful reader and contributor. God Bless!

You sent me back to my Bible this morning, Betty, which is a good thing! I revisited the fruit of the Spirit passage in Galatians 5:22-23,
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Now, there’s another “much more” scripture. Thank you for sharing! God Bless.

I remember this post David! It is memorable for the line “but wait, there’s more!” which has another significance in the life of folk my age in UK and Ireland. We had a famous Irish comedian named Jimmy Cricket who excitedly told his stories interspersed with beckoning listeners to lean in “but wait, there’s more” when he delivered the punchline to great effect. But of course Paul’s stories were better and have an eternally brilliant ending.

Yes I do remember those commercials. As I wasn’t following you back when you first posted this, its a great re-post. Even if I was, its a great re-post. Some things need to be said again, and again, and again……we did ham instead of turkey this year, but a ginsu knife still would have been handy.

It’s so nice to start my day with a spiritual reflection, David. Plus I love your analogies and how you tie them into Scripture. For today, my mind thought – “But wait, there’s more – the gifts of the Holy Spirit!” Thanks for your post, and have a great day!

But wait, there’s more: “and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away (Revelation 21:4).” The best is yet to come! Thanks for another great post.
