Something was swirling and twirling above the bed of the pick-up truck in front of us—trailing out over the interstate in a multi-colored ribbon. “What is that?” I asked my wife.

It was leaves.

As we passed the truck, I saw them–piled up high behind the cab.

“It’s an old-fashioned cordless leaf blower!” I chuckled. “What a genius idea: don’t bag or burn your leaves, load them in the back of your pick-up truck and go for a drive.” I’m familiar with live-streaming, but this was my first encounter with leaf-streaming.

By the time we reached the next exit, a spiritual application came into focus. What am I leaving in my wake, swirling and twirling and trailing behind me? Does it reflect God’s love? I hope so.

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.

Jesus- John 13:34-35 (NIV)

Kind reader, it’s not our astounding biblical knowledge, or the ability to defend our beliefs that ultimately catches the world’s attention, it’s loving others the way Jesus does.

Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

1 John 4:11 (NIV)

Thank you for reading. 🙏🍂🍃❤️ Prayers and God’s leaf-blowing love. 🍃🍃🍂🍃

Thank you, Beth. God’s love is the focus for the third Sunday of Advent, so I wanted to post in the subject. Just being cognizant of what’s it wake is a good start.

Thank you for building on my thoughts with your own excellent allegory, Manette Kay! God’s love, working through us, is indeed like a slip stream—pulling others toward Him.
    🙏His richest blessing to you!

David, I like your reflective question, “What am I leaving in my wake? Yet, I see another allegory in the trail of leaves. When we’re headed in the “right” direction toward Christ, our slipstream [the vacuum created in our wake] will be an assisting force pulling others along.

That’s something to get excited about because the only thing I can take with me into Heaven is a trail of Redeemed souls.

That’s why you sometimes will see increasingly larger planes taking off at an airport – bigger planes aren’t affected by smaller planes in the same way a smaller plane is affected by a larger plane taking off in front of it

Had a few names for various situations

Jet wash is more to do with planes flying through the dirty air behind another jet, not from taking off

David, a lovely analogy and a beautiful message for each of us to “leaf” a stream of love as we travel through this life!

This is very interesting, Andy B. I’ve heard something similar can happen if jets fly to closely behind each other. I think it’s called “jet wash?”

Excellent story and great question. What am I leaving in my wake?

One of my brothers remarked recently that the family system traits we came from sadly leaves broken relationships in our wake. Two generations ago my grandparents on both sides committed their lives to following Jesus in the Northwoods where most of us reside. Those who have chosen to Follow the Lord have seen that chain break and have good and deep relationships with children, spouse and community. Those who do not, take on the family chains of very broken relationships…It’s a very stark contrast.
I am very familiar with those natural leaf blowers. It’s a great insight. It’s not appreciated driving through city streets with flawless lawns though.

It also reminds me of “wake vortices” – the swirling air left behind planes as they go thundering down the runway

Smaller planes can get flipped over by them if created by much larger planes

Unless there’s some mist or similar you can’t see them…..

    So many analogies here!

Ooh deeeeep, this one is 😊

Do we leave a trail of peace or, even better, a trail of broken pieces that point to Jesus? A bit like a breadcrumbs trail?

Sometimes, it’s beneficial to let others tell us what they see in our wake. I only know you through your blog, but respectfully disagree with your fear that you’re not loving and good enough. You most certainly are, and your actions have helped so many—including me!

“What am I leaving behind me?” is a question that makes me uncomfortable, even although I need to ask it. It focuses my thinking, and challenges both my decisions and actions … And yet I fear there isn’t nearly as much love and goodness as there should be!!!
