God With Us

It was the final choir rehearsal of the year, in preparation for my church’s Christmas Eve candlelight service. As is our custom, the group met at our director’s home for a pot-luck dinner, followed by rehearsal.

It was challenging to hear in the reconfigured living room—with all the background noise. As our leader gave instructions, she commented that the true meaning of Christmas was about Immanuel–God with Us. I knew what she said, but here’s what I heard.

Immanuel dot with us

Wow, God has a website?! Immanuel.withus ✝️

This makes me think of how almost anything can be instantly found (on the internet) and ordered these days. We simply search, find, and buy. Yet I’m old enough to remember when my mom ordered out of an old-fashioned catalog. She completed and mailed off an order form and then waited, not a few days but a few weeks, for the merchandise to arrive.

From the fullness of His grace we have all received one blessing after another.

John 1:16 (NIV)

Kind reader, how wonderful it is to have instant access to God the Father through Jesus Christ! Hebrews chapter eleven speaks of the heroes of our faith who looked forward to the birth of God’s son but did not see it. And here we are, thousands of years later, knowing that Jesus came in the flesh, died for our sins, came back to life again, and now sits at God’s right hand in heaven.

For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility.

Ephesians 2:14 (NIV)

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️Prayers and love.

How true, Nadine! We don’t need the 🛜 internet to talk with God. This thought could be another post in itself. 😀 Thanks for reading and commenting.

Mishearing and misreading can result in some very humorous moments.
I’m very glad we don’t need the internet to talk with God. I still pick up the computer and struggle to get where I’m going!
    Merry Christmas David!

I agree, Immanuel is a name that reminds us of God’s presence. “Prince of Peace” is another one of favorites. 🙏His best to you.

My thoughts mirrored yours when I chose your photo for this post, Gary. The full moon breaking through the clouds reminds me that God is still with us.

I have had my own quest this past few months to constantly realize God’s ever present presence. Not in a meditative way or intellectual as much as relational. When I wake it’s now “good morning Jesus” in a natural real way, sensing his presence. I am finding my day has lots of clouds hiding the relational power and brightness of the son in my life (my thot behind the photo).

Immanuel is, for me, one of the most precious names for Jesus. That reassurance that He is with me always is so reassuring, comforting and powerful. Thanks for sharing this David.

Your post is the proof that long before a certain great American painter coined the phrase “happy little accidents ” God was in the business, except they weren’t really accidents…they were “God-incidents.” Of course at Christmas we are now praising God for the greatest God-incident of them all – Immanuel!
God bless you and your family at this Christmas season brother. 🙏 🇺🇲🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I recall this, as well! The thick catalogs were also good to sit on, for little ones who couldn’t quite reach the table.

Thanks, Chris. Yes, I remember the Sears catalog had “good, better, and best “ for just about anything one wanted.
I’m glad God gave His best for us; and He paid for it!
I pray you, and yours, have a blessed Christmas, as well.
    God is good!

It is a precious gift that we have instant access to God at any time. My wife and I were just talking about the old days before the Internet when we would fill out paper order forms or call in an order to the catalog company.

    Have a blessed Christmas!

I remember those catalogs. When I was a child my siblings and I waited eagerly in October-November for them to arrive. We would sit for hours and pick out what we wanted – most of which our parents could never afford. But we could dream!

Thanks, Pastor Pete. The same to you. I’m sure I’ll miss-hear more truth at our Christmas Eve candlelight service. 😊
