Pantry Prankster

The pantry at my house is exceedingly neat and tidy. This is mostly due to the consistent effort of my super-organized wife. Did I mention she’s also beautiful?🥰(Nancy helps edit all my posts) Hello, sweetheart!😍 Don’t delete this, ok?

Anyway, even though I try (kinda sorta), things don’t always get back where they belong—after I take them out of the cupboard.

Actual transcript:

Nancy: (in the pantry) “The crackers are pushed to the back of the shelf! Why are the cookies down here?” (Sound of boxes moving)

Me: (thoughtfully) “Uh….

So, last night I decided to play a little prank. I put the boxes on most of one shelf in alphabetical order. How long would it take her to notice?

I waited and waited. Ok, it was about 30 minutes. “I reorganized the pantry when you were on the phone with your brother,” I say nonchalantly.

“You what!?” Uh oh, she doesn’t sound happy.😬 I hear footsteps, and the creak of pantry doors opening.

My handy work—not photoshopped.

“Very cute,” she says. “But I like to keep the cookies and crackers together and you have them separated. Plus, the Cheese-Its are half open and the Ritz crackers are upside down.”

I didn’t bother confessing that I was the guy, in a fit of hunger, who opened the wrong end of the Ritz box. 😊🙃

Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.

2 Corinthians 7:1 (NIV)

In the pursuit of humor, I’ve made light of my sloppiness in the pantry, and the subsequent joke I played on my wife. But, with God, holiness is no laughing matter.

The writer of Hebrews puts it this way:

Without holiness no one will see the Lord.

Hebrews 12:14b (NIV)

Jerry Bridges, in his classic book The Pursuit of Holiness, points out that holiness is not an accessory to God—like a belt that matches His shoes—it is the totality of who He is.

Paul tells us, in Ephesians, what our practical response should be:

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists of all goodness, righteousness, and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord.

Ephesians 5:8-10 (NIV)

Kind reader, this is a lengthy post (for me), but what I’m trying to say is this: If we belong to God, there should be reasons to believe it’s true.

Is my heart’s pantry organized His way?

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Thank you, Peggy. I’ve actually gotten better at organizing, over the years, thanks to Nancy. My struggle is I’m often in too big of a hurry.
    God Bless your 2024!

They’re crackers who don’t mind standing on their heads. Once I opened the wrong end, their fate was sealed. 😳

The shelf is still in ABC order. I even moved the cream of wheat to its proper spot.
I may glue the boxes to the shelf—just like they are. I’m that proud of my work.

Actually, such a stunt would get me locked in the garage for a few hours. 😊

Seriously, thank you for reading and sharing. God Bless.

That was cute and my main complaint would have been the Upside Down box. Lol

I’m glad the intended message came through, Manette Kay. Humor can be a two-edged sword. My aim was to start light hearted, and then transition to an important point. I’m happy it worked.😊 Thank you for reading and commenting. Happy New Year, and God Bless!

Alphabetical order sounds good to me. Alas many of the snacks in your pantry were some of my favs before I found out I have Celiacs and need gluten free.

I have a feeling your wife is a woman of patience and understanding 🙂

That’s what I’ve been thinking, too, Beth! Portions of Psalm 139 (search me, oh God), and Psalm 19 (may the words of my mouth be acceptable) come to mind. I don’t want to live an unexamined life—at least not from God’s perspective. Thank you for reading and commenting. God Bless!

House in order, indeed! One reason I get up early in the morning is so she won’t make the bed—with me still in it.

Good one David. I relate. Our wives are similar. Mine reacts when I say “OCD”. When I was young, our pastor was always asking “Is your house in order with the Lord?”
It helped being married for awhile to really understand the question.

It’s my blessing to be here! You two are wonderful fun! I’m so happy to be part of the “clouds of witnesses” too! I’m ready to put 2023 to bed and see what God has in store for 2024! Blessings!

She is indeed a gem, Karla. And good natured, too.😊 Of course, I showed her the post, and she approved, before I hit publish. She even left in my little love note!

Thanks for stopping by my little blog. Personal holiness is indeed a solo event, but also one we run while surrounded by a “cloud of witnesses”
God Bless, and here’s to a Happy New Year!

This is wonderful, David! Please tell Nancy she’s a “gem”! Humor is a wonderful thing. And I love how you paralleled the organization to our own soul “pantry”. Holiness was my goal this past year. We all are on our own paths to holiness; our communions with the Holy Spirit are so personal! And we all have to keep our “pantries” aligned with Christ.
PS~your prank would fit in good with my family! Tee hee
    Many blessings!

Good point, brother! We expect God to be holy but often exempt ourselves–for fear we won’t measure up. It’s a good thing we have the “Holy” Spirit to help us!
Thanks for reading and commenting. Blessings to you and Terri, and a wonderful New Year to you, as well.

I’ve misplaced, or given away my copy of “The Pursuit of Holiness,” so I quoted from memory. Yes, our wives are both patient with us. It’s a good thing the name Nancy means “favor,” or “grace.”😊 I also don’t realize I’m messing up the pantry organization–not until I hear her going through it, and saying things like “This doesn’t go here!”☺️
Thank you for stopping by, Pastor Pete! God Bless.

Love that quote on Holiness, not being an accessory. By the way, it is funny that both our wives are named Nancy and they both get after us for messing with their pantry organization (I don’t even realize I’m doing it!)

Well-woven post, David. Yes, the holiness of God should be visible in us at some level, especially as we grow more Christlike. I think the word and the thought of holiness scares us. We expect it of God, but are uncomfortable applying it to ourselves. Peace and Happy New Year!
