There’s Little Surprise for the Wise

Teachers often put motivational messages on their classroom walls. They do this to remind, both themselves and their students, what matters most. One of my favorites contains only five words: “On Purpose for a Purpose.”

In a schoolroom, it’s procedures that make-or-break instruction and learning. Successful teachers have a plan for almost everything, especially in elementary. How to line up, and in what order, where to put your completed assignments, doing such things is not left to chance.

Frankly, in a well-run learning environment, very little is coincidental. Yes, there are “Happy Accidents,” as painter Bob Ross liked to say, but great teachers rarely scratch their heads and say, “I didn’t see that coming…”

Which brings to mind the Wise Men who followed the star to Bethlehem to find the baby Jesus. They traveled on purpose–“We saw his star in the East” —and for a purpose–“and have come to worship Him.” (Matthew 2:2b- NIV)

Kind reader, when it comes to following our own “Star” to fellowship with Jesus, are we purposeful about it? I mean, are we purposeful enough?

And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.

Jeremiah 29:13 (NKJV)

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

This post was supposed to be written and published in time for epiphany, on Saturday (January 6), and I was a day late.

Come to think of it, I may as well share another Christmas themed post next Saturday. That would really be out of season. Or would it?

Thanks, Pastor Pete! His best to you.

Hey Dave, I see you are making, an audacious attempt to share a Christmas message at another time of year. Apparently, you haven’t read the unwritten rule against doing that. Great job, thanks!

I can hear you saying that one, Andy B. As a youth, my pastor used to tell us, “God doesn’t make junk.”

Blessings to you and the bunch!

You’ve taken my little post to a whole new level! Thank you, Gabriel or Hazel, for asking a such probing question: What will we do with Jesus, wisemen, angels, and the shepherds for the duration of the new year?

An explanation is in order. I mentioned it in another comment, we were putting away the outdoor nativity scene at my church. I took the photo because it looked like the wisemen were going on a journey.

I appreciate your powerful, Christ-centered perspective. Blessings!

David, your post causes me to stop and ponder. Are the wisemen to be carted off and left for another year or will we be worshipping Jesus, twenty-four hours, seven days a week? Will we put him away or constantly listen to his voice?

That’s a phrase I use frequently, well nearly

“We’re made on purpose, and with a purpose”

I love your use of alliteration, Manette Kay!

We took down the outdoor nativity at my church last weekend. The figures in the pickup bed are three wise men, Joseph, and Mary. The baby Jesus, shepherds, and two sheep rode in another vehicle.

Thank you for reading and commenting. God Bless!

My brain got stuck on the photo. I see what looks like two soldiers behind the magi on the truck bed. Is there or is that my imagination? Either way, the point of this post is spot on.

God bless you, David, and may your purposeful ponderings procure plenty of produce in paradise during 2024.

Thank you! As you’ve said on your site many times, when we live purposefully it automatically helps with issues that otherwise could be problematic.

To paraphrase a famous philosopher: “The unexamined life is still worth living, but it’s going to be harder!”

    Blessings!🤗

You are right about the God incidents, brother! The Lord often winks at us, but we need to be looking!👀
It’s challenging, at times, to remember His plans are perfect. Yet, they truly are! Thank you for sharing, brother. His best to you!

I can imagine how chaotic life would be at an elementary school, if it wasn’t for all those rules and procedures. They make sure life goes smoothly, and make coping with the unexpected so much easier. Thanks for the reminder that structuring time alone with God – especially at the start of the day – can have the same effect on our unpredictable, uncertain lives. Blessings on your week.

Thank you for this reminder to be purposeful in our Christian walk David, it is such an encouragement. It reminded me of previous conversations contrasting worldly coincidence and Godly incidents; His plans are purposeful and perfect, and we do well if we follow Him. God bless you today brother 🙏

One way I am intentional is to set aside time every morning to seek the Lord. Prayer, devotional reading, and Bible Study are usually what I do during the first hour of the day. I know this is nothing new to many Christians, but doing it consistently has been a real help to starting my day with the Lord.

I took the picture at my church; several of us met to put away the nativity scene. The pickup was headed to the storage shed when I took the picture. It looked like the magi were hitchhiking!

Thank you for stopping by, Chris. God Bless!

Good reminder. Being intentional in our pursuit of Jesus is important. It enables us to hear where he wants us to go. Like the magi, may we follow God’s leading in this new year. Blessings, David. BTW that picture is great.

I enjoyed this so much, David! Such truth~in a classroom and life! This morning I was reading in a devotion of living with, and on, purpose~these words hit me~ “Without intentionality, people tend to drift—becoming complacent instead of motivated, lacking vision instead of leveraging purpose.” No doubt of your vision, or that of the educators helping the students!
I giggled at the Wise Men!😂
