Missing the Farm

Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.

2 Corinthians 5:1 (NIV)

Mrs. Alma looked out the window, kneading the afghan in her lap. Turning back to me, she said, wistfully, “I like it here (in assisted living), but I miss the farm. I never wanted to leave.”

“Oh,” I said. “When did you leave the farm, Mrs. Alma?”—thinking it had been only a short time ago. “In 1981,” she replied. I quickly did the math; it had been fourteen years! Yet to her it seemed like yesterday.

My friend went on to tell me how she and her husband, Clyde, bought the farm after he came back from the war. “It was eighty acres of hard scrabble dirt,” she relayed, “but we turned it into an oasis.”

Mrs. Alma looked out the window once more, her mind miles away from her little room. Still peering at the parking lot, she began quoting one of her favorite Bible verses:

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

2 Corinthians 4:7,18 (NIV)

Finally, she turned toward me once more, but now with her face shining like an angel. I realized I was witnessing a precious moment, between her and the one she called her “Sweet Jesus.” Yes, Mrs. Alma missed the farm, but she longed for heaven even more… and now, so did I!

We live by faith, not by sight.

2 Corinthians 5:7 (NIV)

It was a joyous moment, indeed! At first I was surprised that she still missed the farm, and then she the heavenly part took over. 🤗

Thank you for reading and commenting, Karla. Your Uncle Orie sounds like my papaw and grandmother. I often remind folks I’m only one generation removed from farmers–and proud of it! My parents were both teachers and so am I, but before that, both sides of my family were into farming–for several generations back. I’ll always remember that special moment with Mrs. Alma. She saw straight into heaven, out that window. I know it! Keep on doing that work–the Lord’s work, Karla. God Bless!

David, last week I lost a precious uncle. The Saturday before I visited him to say goodbye. “Uncle Orie, Jesus is waiting and so is the farm.” The slideshow on Saturday had many pictures of him at his farm. Even better, the preacher shared the truth about the promise we have of eternity in heaven–if we choose! People were listening! We need hope! We all gathered at the church and precious ladies fed us all fried chicken and other homecooked soul-satisfying foods. The pastor kept pouring coffee and the love of Jesus. What a homecoming for my uncle! When I taught, I’d take the kids to the nursing homes and sing (and read). I absolutely LOVE my elders! I’d rather sit and talk about heaven and all the things of their lives than the things of this world. Mrs. Alma knew what was waiting! Praise God! I know what’s waiting in Beulah Land and when I cross over the river–and I’ve got a lot of work to do while I’m here, my friend! Thank you and Pete for sharing the truth and good news of the hope in Jesus!

The number caught my attention because my children were all born in the 80s and they are waaay beyond their teens. 😃

David, I love the lesson here in this post. But I’m confused about the math from 1981 until now, which is 43 years rather than 14. Is this an older repost thus throwing the mathematical date off?
God bless you and Nancy as you minister to the seniors.

Amen, brother! Pre-COVID, we sang at a different nursing home or assisted living center every Saturday. We are now down to one.

As you said, many residents not only feel forgotten, it’s often the case that they are. Just sitting and listening to their stories is a blessing—to them and us.
It’s so wonderful that God’s faith, hope, and love are available to all, regardless of circumstances. Eternal life is available for all who trust in Christ—guaranteed!

This is a very important devotional…I worry that many elderly people are forgotten in nursing homes, left only with memories.
We minister in nursing homes twice a month and see elderly Christians and non Christians.

The non Christians are generally miserable, but the Christians cling to the promise of eternal life, even in bodies racked with pain and disease.

All we can do is try to convert the former into the latter, thankfully the gospel still saves souls!

    Thanks for sharing, brother David!

Thanks for sharing your story, Betty! Nancy and I have met so many wise and wonderful souls in our volunteer work at nursing homes and assisted living centers.
Someone has said that God doesn’t have any grandchildren—we each must come to him on our own. However, like you I had godly grandparents and an angel mom who pointed the way for me.
I hope you and Dan have a great week!

Thank you, Alan. My grandmother lived to be 100, and every time I visited her she wanted me to play and sing “I Feel Like Traveling On.” She enjoyed her life here on earth, but was ready to be promoted to heaven.

What a beautiful piece of writing David. It reminded me of my mum in her final years in the nursing home; she longed to be with her Lord and eventually she received her reward. As painful as her passing was for us it was a cause to celebrate her promotion to Glory too.
God bless you today brother 🙏 🇺🇲🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

David, this reminds me of a conversation I had with my Grandma. I said something along the lines of her living to 100. She was in her upper 90’s at that point – I don’t remember exactly. She replied, “Don’t wish that on me!” I made some kind of loving protest – I don’t remember exactly what I said. Then she said, “Believe me. The next world is more real to me than this one.” My grandparents had a strong faith in God, and I was witness to how their faith gave them strength in their final years – and for my Grandpa – his final days.
