As Strong as a Mother’s Love

The young couple came quietly into the waiting room at the doctor’s office. Mom went straight to the receptionist, while dad stood cradling their toddler son against his shoulder. Once checked in, they sat down across from me. I noticed the young child never moved a muscle.

Then, I picked up on mom’s demeanor: her eyes looked tired and worried, and her body posture followed suit. It’s been a few years, but I remember these timesβ€”staying up all night with a feverish child.

Within a few minutes, the young man handed the little boy to his wife, and then promptly took out his cell phone. Yes, I probably would have done that, tooβ€”back in 1995β€”but my phone was the size of a brick. 🧱

Mom rested the little guy on her left shoulder, again he never moved a muscle. I looked down for a moment, and when I looked back up, she had her phone out as well, scrolling away with her right hand.

Taking in the scene, I realized: the tug of a cell phone is as strong as a mother’s love.

Rather than judging the young coupleβ€”hey, I do it tooβ€”my thoughts turned to a spiritual implication.

What in my life competes for God’s attention and affection?

And this question reminded me of the fact that the Lord doesn’t double date.

I am the Lord; that is my name! I will not yield my glory to another or my praise to idols.

Isaiah 42:8 (NIV)

Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.

Exodus 34:14 (NIV)

Kind reader, I have no sage words of advice; there’s only the picture of a mom with her sick son in one hand and her cell phone in the other. And with this a deep conviction that I must love God, both better and more.

Whatever your heart clings to and confides in, that is really your God.

Martin Luther

Thank you for reading. πŸ™β€οΈ prayers and love.

Very poignent moment, but maybe she was texting family to update them and ask for prayers. I do love that quote from Luther also.

I like that modern metaphor, David. It’s a great illustration.

Your comment brings to mind how Jesus talked about the wide and the narrow roads. Tweaking the metaphor, there’s a lot more β€œworld β€œbandwidth than Jesus bandwith being used at the moment. Just my best guess. Thanks for sharing, brother!

That’s a powerful quote by Martin Luther. I’m currently working through an audiobook by John Mark Comer called β€œPracticing the Way” that examines what it looks like to be formed more by Jesus than the world around us. What are those things vying for our attention that aren’t Jesus? I imagine there are many. Good post, David.

If only there was an app on my phone with a capital G (for God) with little red numbers over it. Inside of Instagram it could be β€œInsta-God.”

Agreed, Jeff. And the app designers have created β€œsticky” content that is as powerful as any casino 🎰 game. In fact, a well known former employee of Google calls cell phones πŸ“± slot machines in your pocket.

God is worthy of our wholehearted attention, but distractions tend to have a pull. Thankfully, God is eternally patient with us.

Thanks for the reminder, David. We do have to guard against allowing things or even other people to become idols in our lives.

Good point, Chris. Before our phones were a distraction, it was something else. The point is, are we reaching for something or listening to something before reaching out and listening to the Lord.

David, I appreciate your wise words weaved with God’s truth! “God doesn’t double date.” You’re viewing life with the lens of Christ-it’s beautiful! I notice the same things. In my effort to put “first things first” (which must be Christ), I’m devoting much time to reading, studying, and praising in the mornings. I’m intentionally NOT using my phone (except for the YouVersion app). My family and I had a discussion similar to this scene yesterday as we gathered to celebrate my Dad’s birthday. You have such a beautiful gift with words! Thank you for sharing this beautiful message! Many blessings!

Thanks, David, for this thought provoking post. It makes me consider what in my life distracts me from God? I’ve wondered the same thing when I see a full waiting room with people all looking at their phones (including me). Sometimes I wonder if it’s any different than before smart phones when people in a waiting room were focused on a magazine, book, or a tv on the wall. I guess the difference is that you knew what they were doing. Today you don’t know if they’re reading scripture, gambling, texting an update on their child, watching a video, or making a post to ask for prayer. The question still remains, are we distracted from listening to God?

I’ve wondered that myselfβ€”if I should stop blogging to spend more time on other things. I did prayerfully debate for some time whether to stop blogging. Then an alternative came to mind πŸ€”This year I reduced the number of posts each week to spend more time on other writing projects. I think it’s important to regularly assess what we’re doing. I’ll take a look at the blog you referenced.

David, I’m convicted as I hold my phone to read your post and type a response. I don’t know if you happen to read Ally @ The Spectacled Bean. She asked her readers recently what would make them stop blogging. Coming to the decision that I’m spending too much time doing it is a good answer. Your post makes me think.

Thank you, Beth! Yes, if C.S. Lewis were alive today he might very well scratch what little hair he had left right off the top of his head. Of course, he would then make a huge cup of tea and start writing. πŸ€—

You bring up a good point, we often reach for our phones, or some other distraction, when we least need to be distracted. We tune out (to God, and others) when we need to tune in.
This could be another post in itself!
Thank you for your encouragement and friendship in the Lord. God Bless!

“the Lord doesn’t double date.” This is one of those phrases you read, pause and read again to let the fullness of its meaning sink in. The temptation to be distracted in a hard moment rather then sit in the moment being silent and listening for the Savior is real and great. If CS Lewis were living in today’s world I wonder at the changes he would make in the Screwtape Letters.

It’s hard for me to watch people in the ER waiting rooms. People want some sort of control. I wish I could say I have seen more people praying than getting on their phones. A great line David and so true…”God doesn’t double date”
