Three Rocks. One Story.

The first rock made its way to my bookshelf in 2011. Anthony, one of my students, found it while walking to school and brought it to me. It’s an ordinary looking grey stone, worn smooth from years of weather, about the size of those chocolate eggs you see at Easter. But it meant something special to Anthony, so I kept it—in plain sight, on a shelf in my classroom.

It wasn’t long before other students started bringing me their treasured nuggets; word travels fast in an elementary school: “Mr. Duncan likes rocks!” Two became three and three became four. And now there are seven. Each one is like a mile marker, reminding me of who gave it to me, and when and why.

But today’s post is about three rocks I found recently—all in the space of one week.  Jon Gordon, author of The Energy Bus, and other self-improvement books, spoke at a recent conference I attended. His message was about living with positivity through loving, sharing, and caring–#lovesharecare.

I was several rows away from Jon, but his can-do energy lit up the screen.

The weekend after Jon’s keynote, my wife and I were at a local garden center where I found a soft heart-shaped rock. It was just a river stone, that fell through a hole in a bag, but to me it represented love—from Jon’s talk. I was willing to pay up to a dollar for it, but the cashier let me have it for free!

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, you must love one another.” John 13:34 (NIV)

The next Tuesday, while out walking, I found a miniature slab of granite sunning itself under a red cedar. The milk-chocolate colored stone was flat on top—like a table—which made me think of the word serve, the second ingredient in Jon’s positive recipe. I decided to pick it up. Pet rocks don’t bite, right?

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45 (NIV)

Next, it was time to complete the trio. I embarked on an all-out quest for a rock that screamed care! Well, I soon found it, or did it find me? It was another piece of granite, lying next to the curb on a tree-lined street. Its oval shape fit comfortably in my hand, and the shiny flecks of embedded quartz sparkled like glitter in the sunlight. Are you as enthralled as I was, kind reader?

“Take care of my sheep.” Jesus—John 21:16b (NIV)

Seriously, the sprinkles of quartz remind how Jesus said His followers are the salt of the earth. Being embedded sparkling caregivers is a distinctive people-of-God thing. That’s what Josephus, an early church historian realized, when Christians stayed behind in Rome to care for the sick and dying (during a plague). This was when anyone who was rich and powerful enough left the city for their time share in Pompeii—before the volcano, of course.😳🌋

Jon Gordon concluded his talk by noting that a wonderful thing about #lovesharecare is it grows when you demonstrate it. He then challenged each of us to plan how we will better love, share, and show others we care.

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

#lovesharecare

Thank you, Nancy. I work with kids for a living, as an educational administrator, so it probably helps me keep thinking like a kid. Thanks for stopping by! God Bless.

My granddaughter often gives me rocks she thinks are pretty. And they are. It’s amazing how God can enthrall a child with the beauty of a simple rock. As we grow older, we get so used to God’s wondrous gifts that we no longer pause to behold them. But I’m glad to see you haven’t! 🙂

Thank you. You’ve asked a good question–why offer to give away the rocks I found? I suppose I wondered if someone needed them more than me. However, you are correct, God led me to each of these rocks and they hold extra special meaning to me. I haven’t gotten any takers, which may very well prove your point. I appreciate your encouragement to pause and examine why I would part with the trio.

Awesome Post! But, why wouldn’t you want to keep the rocks that spoke to you? You have passed the thought, act and idea to others. God is speaking to you in your particular finds.

I love them, too, and seem to find interesting ones—when I’m not really looking for them! Petrified wood is my favorite in our flower bed. I found a few pieces years ago, at my great uncle’s farm. Thanks for stopping by, grandma! God bless!

Jon may very well be a Christian, as well. He professes to a belief in God in his books and talks. Hopefully, this means he is a disciple of Christ. Regardless, he doesn’t preach we should worship ourselves, which is idolatry, of course. Thanks, Bridget. 🙏 for you and yours.

Years ago I read some Jon Gordon books. He is inspiring. I love how you were able to find three rocks that represented the three main points. It’s amazing how the Lord can use so many avenues to speak to us and encourage us.

Now that you mention it, the Old Testament has many such stories of “spiritual markers” the Israelites created to remind them of their deliverance from God, or some other significant event. Thank you for sharing this! God Bless!

Thank you, Betty! The care rock sparkles even more in person. I struggled to get a good photo of its twinkling flecks of quartz. I like your idea of the virtual rock giveaway. A picture in your phone to remind could be just as good as 3 rocks physically on display. Plus, if you kept them loose in your RV, they would roll all over the place. 😀

David, you and this article rock! First, thank you for sharing so beautifully. The speaker, the heart shaped rock, the sparkling “salt” of the Earth~all of these speak about how our immovable Rock hosts his Kingdom! We! The Church! His hands and feet ~and the rocks that matter. I’ll check out this speaker and his books. David, I collect rocks, lol. In nature I look for heart-shaped rocks. I paint them, give them away, and some rocks, I have sitting around from various rivers, vacations, and times when my sons, or others, have given them to me. Thank you for being a shining light and a rockstar (I couldn’t help that!). When I hit rock bottom, our Rock was solid ! God bless you and your family!
Those rocks are priceless my friend! ❤️🙏🏻

David, I enjoyed this post! I like the three words, “Love, Serve, Care.” It’s easy to put these 3 words in front of mind to guide us as we go throughout our day. I like how the “Care” rock sparkles. When we serve others, we can do it with joy and “sparkle.” Our energy spreads. Now, thank you for the offer of the rocks – I’ll take it – but only figuratively. You might say, I have rocks in my head. 🙂 Have a great day, David!

This reminds me of how Samuel took a great stone and dedicated it to the Lord (“Here I lay my Ebenezer”) to remind him that God had given him victory over his enemies. These concrete reminders are so important to us. Thanks for sharing about your rocks, and their significance.
