Waiting for the Light to Change

One day last week, my wife and I were waiting to turn left, against a steady stream of cross traffic. Rarely a patient driver, I shook my head, “This is ridiculous!” My more forbearing bride said, “The traffic light will change.”

Taking a deep breath, while nodding my head, I heard a gentle voice within—unmistakably the Holy Spirit: “Will you?” Given the context, I knew exactly what God was getting at, was I going to stay moldable in His capable hands, or not?

The devotional reading in Oswald Chamber’s My Utmost for His Highest, the next morning, clarified further: “Every God given vision will become real if we only have patience.” Chambers also points out how many of God’s children are in a rush to fulfill His vision for their lives. Yet the Lord never seems to be in much of a hurry.

Many of his choicest servants from our favorite Bible stories waited a long time for the proverbial light to change. Picture the prophet Habakkuk, standing on the wall—watching for God to deliver Jerusalem from its enemies.

For the vision is yet for an appointed time; but at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.

Habakkuk 2:3 (NIV)

Kind reader, it takes time for the Lord to shape us into His chosen vessels. In the interim, may we “lean forward” to strengthen our relationship with Him.

Let us know, let us pursue the knowledge of the Lord. His going forth is established as the morning; He will come to us like the rain, like the latter and former rain to the earth.

Hosea 6:3 (NKJV).

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

I love that God teaches us that it’s not necessary to be in a frazzled hurry.

Amen. Otherwise, I may not hear His still, small voice.

Amen, brother. As they say in the chess world, “Sit on your hands.” Be quick, but don’t hurry. Blessings to you and yours, as well. 🙏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇺🇸

The light was out of sight, farther up the street, which made it even more difficult to be patient! Sometimes, miracles hide. 🫣 Thanks for reading and commenting. God Bless!

Come to think if it, I don’t recall ever waiting to turn left while driving a boat. 🛶

we are alike and our wives are like minded. Personally, I have way more patience in a boat than in a car.

Yes! God stays patient with us, even when we lose patience—with ourselves and others. Thank you for sharing.

I love your analogy, Betty. Thank you for strengthening and stretching this post with a scripture as well! Being patient means not running God’s red lights, and being cautious on the yellow ones. Yield!⚠️ thanks for sharing.

David, as always, I love the analogies in this post. It makes me think of the verse – “… the fruit of the Spirit is … patience.” And I like your proposal of what to do while being patient. I’d like to add one more analogy to your post. Left turns. I dislike them intensely. Life has left turns, too. But our faith is like the traffic light guiding us through “the valley of the shadow of death” safely. Now that I’ve written this, I think your analogies are much better, but maybe you get the idea. And your wife has sage advice.
