The Sittin’ Spot

The silver-haired woman who lived across the street from us when I was a kid was a mystery to me. Most summer mornings, she sat alone at her front yard picnic table, under the shade of a large pecan tree, doing what appeared to be absolutely nothing.

Curious, I asked my mom why the grandmother-lady just sat there all day. โ€œThatโ€™s Mrs. Deeds,โ€ she said. โ€œAnd sheโ€™s not just sitting there. You should go visit with her some time.โ€

One Saturday morning as I rode my bicycle up and down our residential street, I had one eye on the road and one eye on Mrs. Deeds. She was sitting in her usual spot with a large bowl in her lapโ€”singing!  ๐ŸŽถPlenty good room. Plenty good room. Thereโ€™s plenty good room on the glory train. ๐ŸŽถ  Iโ€™m at a full stop now, eyes gaping. โ€œCome on over, child,โ€ she said with a grin. โ€œI donโ€™t bite.โ€

I walked my bike up, putting it down in the shade, and sat down across from her. โ€œWhatโ€™s in the bowl?โ€ I asked. โ€œTheyโ€™re pecans, child. Iโ€™m shelling them to make a pie. I pick up baskets of these from underneath this tree, and I always make good use of them.โ€ Inquisitive and artless, I blurted out the burning question on my mind: โ€œWhy do you sit here by yourself all day?โ€

With an, I-knew-you-would-ask-me-that look she replied, โ€œIโ€™m not alone, child. This is my sittin’ spot with the Lord.โ€ I looked around, like a typical eight-year-old, expecting some guy named โ€œLordโ€ to appear. โ€œOh, you canโ€™t see the Lord,โ€ she chuckled. โ€œYou feel Him in your heart, and you think about Him in your head.โ€ I learned to shell pecans that day, but most importantly I discovered that God is someone you can know as a friend.

The next winter, during a childrenโ€™s crusade at the little Baptist church I attended, I came to know the Lord myself. As we sat on the creaky wooden church pews, the evangelist shared with us kids that Jesus died for our sins so we could be friends with God. โ€œJust like Mrs. Deeds!โ€ I thought. Raising my hand, I came forward during the altar call. I wanted to know the Savior who loved me enough to die in my place. Today, forty-seven years later, I have my own sittinโ€™ spot where I meet God every morning.

So the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend.

Exodus 33:11a (NKJV)

She was a treasure indeed, Priscilla. Mrs. Deeds never seemed to be in a hurry, with life or with the Lord.

Thank you, Manette. Mrs. Deeds had such faith in God, and it didnโ€™t seemed forced. Her relationship with God was so present and so real. It gave me a hunger (prompted by the Holy Spirit) for the same thing.

She was happy for me, Nancy. We didnโ€™t attend the same church in town, but I had many more wonderful conversations with her at that picnic table. And she was one of the first adults (outside my church) I told about my conversion.

Such a sweet story, David. Mrs. Deeds must have been so pleased when you became a Jesus-follower. My favorite sittin’ spot with the Lord is also outdoors–on our deck. Michael Hyatt, former CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishing, called the outdoors God’s living room. What better place to enjoy his company?!

David, this is a wonderful retelling of your testimony and encounter with Mrs. Deeds. It could easily be a scene from a Christian film. I pray that all Christians have the Spirit flowing through them as Mrs. Deedsโ€“ready to share a drink from the well she obviously drew from while in her sittin’ spot.

It’s my blessing, David. I saw a few of them just today. You and Pastor Pete, and others I’m sure, would have enjoyed my experience. I am visiting my former community. Came “home” to attend a little log church in the woods called The Gathering ~ the Word was alive, and we all gathered to hear truth in so many different books of the Bible~ but to be Do’ers! It has blessed me to come home for a couple of days and I’ll be sure to share about it later. You’ll appreciate the environment! Going to the Southern Gospel picnic at Silver Dollar City later. May you and your family stay blessed and safe!! Thank
    You for all you do!

Mrs. Deeds truly was a lay counselor to many in our little community. And folks knew where to find herโ€”sitting at the picnic table in her front yard. Iโ€™ve heard of places in sub-Saharan Africa where war and famine are prevalent, that have โ€œgrandmotherโ€ benches, placed in easily accessible places. A wise maternal elder sits and waits to visit with anyone who needs a listening ear. Traveling Trauma Counselors!
