Traveling

I ran into an old high school friend the other day. After catching up on what’s new in our lives, I asked about his parents, who are both in their early eighties.

He told me his dad likes to say—with a wink—your mom and I are traveling a lot in our retirement: we travel to the doctor, and we travel to the pharmacy, and we travel to physical therapy.

My friend’s dad may have been joking, but he’s describing a reality many senior adults know well. Concerns about failing health, rather real or imaginary, can shake the faith of those of us who understand we aren’t getting any younger.

Thankfully, the Bible tells us how to handle anxiety (age-related or otherwise). Rather than being consumed with our cares, or sweeping them under the rug, we’re encouraged to cast them on God

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)

King David, of ancient Israel, lived a long life–with many ups and downs. And he shares, in the Psalms, what brought him through:

When I am afraid, I will trust in you.

Psalm 56:3 (NIV)

Confession: My wife and I have both been healthy as a horse for years, so, when new medical issues arise, it’s easy to let our first response be fear. Can you relate?

Yet, God knows and cares, and promises to never leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). His heavenly travel insurance covers everything—with no deductible!

Kind reader, thank you for stopping by. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Great post, David. And timely on my end. Yes, aging and ailments can lead to anxious moments. We’ve (Terri and I) have had to do a lot of trusting the Lord in recent weeks.

True. My wife had a brief health crisis this summer that left us both reeling. Thankfully, time and modern medicine brought her back to normal. It’s sometimes hardest to find faith when we need it the most. But God is faithful. Thank you for reading and commenting, Beth. God Bless!

Can I relate? Absolutely. I have also learned that turning to the Bible in the wake of a diagnosis for a new ailment is much more helpful than turning to Google. The first gives peace with the promise of eternal life and a new body while the later is guaranteed to further exacerbate fear and anxiety.

Chicken droppings are slick! I’ve slipped in some before, at my grandparent’s house. I hope you are good as new soon, sister Super-C!

So sorry to hear of your accident 😢
certainly hen pen is one of the slippiest substances known to man…and the smelliest too. If it drives you closer to Him and His Word…that is a good result indeed. I pray that your knee heals fast sister 🙏

I had a “travel” incident. I slipped on a squishy pile of chicken poop last weekend and twisted my knee. I could hardly walk it was so painful. So in order to guide my steps, I’ve been declaring healing Scriptures over myself. This is my go-to with any of my ranch related mishaps. I have a little chicken who follows me everywhere, and she cocks her head from side to side as I’m saying these. It is so cute. My knee is doing much better today, for the Word of God spoken out loud is powerful indeed.

I can relate to all of this. Isaiah 46:4 is a favourite of mine. “Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” I’ve had some personal health changes that are a bit scary. Thankful for the promise of the unchanging presence of God. Carrying and sustaining us. And if his rescue involves changing our address to heaven? It’s a win/win.

I love the humour of the older gentleman; it is a great way to deal with the difficulties that we face. Susan and I are not that old (honestly!😁), but we are doing a lot of ‘travelling’ lately too. As well as humour there is also the reassurance that you highlight David; our Father God is holding us in His care – that is a powerful encouragement indeed. May our Father God continue to hold you and Nancy close, guiding your steps each day. 🙏🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

My husband (84) and I (76) can relate to that. Our bodies tell us we are not as young as we like to think we are. Still, when we start to complain about our aches and pains, I remind us that we are blessed to have been allowed to reach these years. Many of family and friends have not had that privilege. I also remember that although the years we have left on this earth are few, it only means we are closer than ever to home. We pray each day that whatever time God gives us, we will use it to bring Him glory and be a blessing to others as we demonstrate how to serve God in old age.

I think most people actually suffer from anxiety on a fairly regular basis. Hence, the importance of putting into practice the verses you cite above. “When I am afraid I WILL TRUST IN YOU”, and consciously casting our anxieties on the lord whenever they begin to consume us again. Thank goodness we walk through this life with a God who is always there, and who always cares.

As I have watched my parents age, of course I worry about them. And I also worry about my own old age a lot. So I thank you for the reminder to trust the Lord, when fear creeps in. I’m so grateful that He is always there. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow… “His heavenly travel insurance covers everything—with no deductible!” I love that 😉
