Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before unknown men.
Proverbs 22:29 (NKJV)
I could tell the mop-headed sixth grader on the playground basketball court was about to lose his temper. Another kid had just dribbled around him, like he was standing still, and scored an easy lay-up. His face turned red–like his disheveled hair — as he bowed up to the other player, who walked away smiling.
When I strolled up, the game evaporated. Yet the ruddy young man lingered, just off the court, with the ball on his chest. His anger noticeably faded, he now appeared to be contemplating his existence.
“Tough game?” I asked, sympathetically. “Someday, I’m gonna play in the NBA,” he said with the surprising surety of a twelve-year-old. For some reason my sympathy pivoted to tough love.
“Really? There are only about 400 players in the NBA—the best of the best. How do you plan to get from here to there? You’re not even the best basketball player at this school.”
“Someday” is a dangerous word.
Rainer Bantau, over at the Devotional Guy, asked a great question yesterday: “What does blogging mean to you?”
For me, sharing my thoughts on this little street corner of the internet has helped me grow, both as a writer and a storyteller. Blogging turned my, “Someday, I’m gonna be a professional devotional writer,” into positive action.
One sure way to become a better anything is to do it more, and sometimes with people who are more skilled at it than you. That’s basically how I wrapped up my conversation with the red-headed future basketball star. I explained that he first needed to become the best basketball player in his neighborhood, then the school, then in the city, and eventually one of the best in the state. Then he might have a shot at his NBA dream.
Back to Rainer’s question:
First, blogging is an outlet for my creativity, an acceptable place to share in the life story niche from a biblical perspective. Second, it’s an opportunity to influence others as a minister of the gospel. And third, as a blogger I’ve met other like-minded folks who are doing the same thing, and some of them are better at it than me.
Kind reader, this isn’t from my usual menu. Thank you for your indulgence.
As Abraham Lincoln said, “Whatever you are, be a good one.” And as Jesus said, “The first shall be last, and the last shall be first.” In other words, the joy is in the journey, but make sure you’re headed somewhere worth going.
Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.
