From Dreams to Action: The Blogging Journey

Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before unknown men.

Proverbs 22:29 (NKJV)

I could tell the mop-headed sixth grader on the playground basketball court was about to lose his temper. Another kid had just dribbled around him, like he was standing still, and scored an easy lay-up. His face turned red–like his disheveled hair — as he bowed up to the other player, who walked away smiling.

When I strolled up, the game evaporated. Yet the ruddy young man lingered, just off the court, with the ball on his chest. His anger noticeably faded, he now appeared to be contemplating his existence.

“Tough game?” I asked, sympathetically. “Someday, I’m gonna play in the NBA,” he said with the surprising surety of a twelve-year-old. For some reason my sympathy pivoted to tough love.

“Really? There are only about 400 players in the NBA—the best of the best. How do you plan to get from here to there? You’re not even the best basketball player at this school.”

“Someday” is a dangerous word.

Rainer Bantau, over at the Devotional Guy, asked a great question yesterday: “What does blogging mean to you?”

For me, sharing my thoughts on this little street corner of the internet has helped me grow, both as a writer and a storyteller. Blogging turned my, “Someday, I’m gonna be a professional devotional writer,” into positive action.

One sure way to become a better anything is to do it more, and sometimes with people who are more skilled at it than you. That’s basically how I wrapped up my conversation with the red-headed future basketball star. I explained that he first needed to become the best basketball player in his neighborhood, then the school, then in the city, and eventually one of the best in the state. Then he might have a shot at his NBA dream.

Back to Rainer’s question:

First, blogging is an outlet for my creativity, an acceptable place to share in the life story niche from a biblical perspective. Second, it’s an opportunity to influence others as a minister of the gospel. And third, as a blogger I’ve met other like-minded folks who are doing the same thing, and some of them are better at it than me.

Kind reader, this isn’t from my usual menu. Thank you for your indulgence.

As Abraham Lincoln said, “Whatever you are, be a good one.” And as Jesus said, “The first shall be last, and the last shall be first.” In other words, the joy is in the journey, but make sure you’re headed somewhere worth going.

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Good point, Pastor Pete. In reality, we write, speak, and live our lives before an audience of one—the God of all creation. Amen!

When whatever we do is done with all all our heart for the Lord, then we are standing before the most important king of all. The King of kings! Excellent post David.

Thank you, brother. I’ve used the same advice with more than one student. I think the second one dreamed of being a broadway star, yet hadn’t been in a school play before. I gave them a good part, and they grew from there.

I like what you turned out to be even better, brother. I trust you do too.

When I was 12, I ran away from the circus to join the 6th grade.

    Lame joke. 😊

What a beautiful response to my question, David. You are truly gifted in finding the right anecdotes to communicate your point effectively. I love the “Jerusalem, Samaria, World” theme that is the bedrock of your advice to the aspiring basketball player. The more often you do something, the better you are bound to get at it. That is evident in your writing. Keep on, keeping on. As Alan K has reminded me, we are writing for an audience of ONE first. Blessings.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting as well, Mike. Yep, I was talking to myself as much as anyone else. It’s easier to dream than to do, but both go hand in hand.

Great reminder that the best way to get better at something, is to practice. The only way to practice is to actually do it. Thanks for the encouragement to get back onto my own writing journey.

It is so important to keep our dreams in front of us, and never give up! We see ourselves as the champion and continue to practice to see the vision come to pass.

I was having a conversation with my hubby last night about vision boards. Before I made one, I thought it was all ridiculous. BUT I was wrong. There is something mystical about thinking and writing down your goals and then displaying them. My first blog post of this year was about vision boards. Hop over here to read it. Great post, David! Thank you for sharing.
