Climbing Life’s Ladders: A Personal Testimony

It was a peculiar sight, walking into the local post office this week. Two step ladders stood out on the grass—all by themselves, several feet from anything.  I noticed someone left their jacket hanging on one of them. Sure enough, two guys were on the roof of the post office. But how did they get up there? And what were they doing with two ladders to nowhere, painting the sky?

This reminds me of my own misadventures, climbing the world’s ladder to nothing. After I lost my career and marriage, within the span of six months, I was disillusioned and distrustful of a “loving” God. How could He let this happen?

I got a job in sales and dedicated myself to making as much money, and having as much fun, as possible. But God wouldn’t let me go! His all-powerful love (which is no joke) kept pursuing me. One day, with tears rolling down my face, I fell to my knees, and prayed, “Heavenly Father, here I am, please take me back!” As soon as I said it, the Holy Spirit replied, “I never let you go.”

He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord.

Psalm 40:2-3 (NIV)

Kind reader, there’s power in a personal testimony of God’s redeeming love. What’s your story? I was inspired to write this one, after seeing those ladders to nowhere, and reading my friend Dean’s personal story of God’s redemption: A Hotdog Changed the Course of My Life.

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

  1. […] During the interview, we had some fun and laughs, but also some deep discussion about faith. Some fellow bloggers also came up during our conversation, Alicia of forhispurpose.blog, Karla of flannelwithfaith.com, and David of davidsdailydose.org. […]

Powerful, brother, powerful! I had a similar experience in life and the Holy Spirit revealed to me that I was just a rebellious sheep who fell off the path into sinful brambles…and that God was still on the path beckoning me to step back on the path so he could love me forward again.

Thank you, Crystal. I think I stumbled upon a writing hack with this piece. If you can capture the essence of your emotions—about something—others will feel it too. 🤗 Authenticity is contagious!

I knew it—you used to be in sales, brother Matt! That’s why you’re such a smooth talker, story and joke teller, and coffee ☕️drinker.
Jesus always knows our address, just like the IRS.

God is relentless in his pursuit of love for us. I remember back in 1988-1989 how Christians kept coming into the office furniture dealership I sold for. Each time it would get my attention.

It happened twenty-four years ago, Majik. A real rock bottom experience. But, like you said, Jesus saves—regardless!! Thank you for sharing the link to your testimony. There’s power in a great story, especially one about God redemptive power. Blessings, brother!!

I hadn’t thought about someone may have moved the ladders. 🪜 🪜 They didn’t look tall enough to reach the roof, though. Maybe they were for painting the sides of the building? Thank you for faithfully stopping by my little blog—week after week. God Bless!

I did not hear an audible voice, it was like a talking billboard in my mind, if that makes sense. It felt like God was saying, “Now, that’s a silly question!” I remember feeling a deep sense of relief, mixed with shame. The shame was there, because I realized I had walked away from the Lord, but He never walked away from me. And the relief was there for the same reason.

It’s hard to imagine you, David, with a career and marriage in ruins, knowing you as I do only from this blog of yours, which I think is quite good and gives God the Glory. But I guess that He really is good at what He does, what His Name, “Jesus” literally means, “The LORD SAVES!” and your life is a fine example that.

Excellent testimony of God’s Grace in your life brother, thank you for sharing it with us. It reminded me of when I was far from God and seeking His forgiveness in prayer…He sent an evangelist to knock on my front door! He truly is a loving Father. May He continue to guide and bless you and Nancy today 🙏 🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Thank you for sharing your story, David! The Holy Spirt’s response is powerful and beautiful. ❤️

If you don’t mind sharing, did you hear the Holy Spirts reply as if someone was speaking to you? It’s a fascinating aspect of some testimonies, and it sounds like it may have been a part of yours.
