How Jesus Satisfies Our Spiritual Thirst

One recent Saturday morning, a black-capped chickadee came to our bird bath for a drink. He perched on the brim, as usual, but the water was too low for him to reach. Nevertheless, he kept bobbing his little head down and back up again, with his beak hitting only air. It was comical and sad at the same time, watching him try to get a drink over and over but failing. I rushed out to refill the birdbath with fresh water.

The scene reminded me of the Bible story where Jesus met the woman at the well (John 4:4-42). He asked her to give Him a drink and offered her living water in return. She commented that the well was deep, and Jesus had nothing to draw with, but the “well” of her soul was deeper still. There was no way this lady could reach the gift of eternal life and a deep, fulfilling relationship with God under her own power.

You and I can’t either.

Kind reader, the stuff of earth can never quench our spiritual thirst. Only Jesus Christ can give us living water—a perpetual source of spiritual nourishment and eternal life—to satisfy our deepest needs.

Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.
 Jesus – John 7: 37b, 38 (NIV)

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Thank you for reading and commenting, brother Eric! I knew it was an illustration straight from heaven when I saw that little guy keep trying to reach the water. The chasm between us and God can only be bridged by God.

What a brilliant picture God gave you through that little chickadee. I love it, brother David!

We have chickadees at our feeder also, and they are the smallest of all the birds…almost dainty. I thought of that also as I read your post. We humans are in need of Living Water and so frail in the eyes of God. But He loves us dearly!

Thank you brother David, have a blessed day!

Yes! And He sometimes meets us when we have no real idea where we are. It’s a good thing God is love, because we sure need it!

I believe it was Friedrich Nietzsche who commented that the Old Testament is mostly gloom and doom and “God is really mad,” but the New Testament is more, “It’s OK, everyone, God’s loves you and is in a much better mood.”
Congrats on making all the way through the OT. I’ve never read the whole thing, at least I don’t think so.
Thank you for reading and commenting, Crystal. God Bless!

Thank you for reading and commenting. The little bird didn’t come back right away, but I’m sure he did later. God Bless!

Good that you could refill the water so the bird could drink, David. Your analogy to the woman at the well was great. Blessings!

Amen 🙏🏾. As we keep doing the work to edify the church, we hope our prayers, writing and exhortations will draw people back to God. Sometimes we underestimate our writing, but consider that most of Paul’s ministry consisted of his letters and writings. Blessings 😊🙏🏾

Thank you, Pastor Pete. I’m sure I gleaned the “deeper still” part from my devotional reading—maybe Henry Blackaby, with his Experiencing God Day by Day devotional. Blessings.

Thank you, Anneta. There are so many voices in the world that compete for God’s attention. Yet His reassurance that, “Child, you are mine” remains.
The picture was created by artificial intelligence (AI) for the post, but it looks close to what I saw out the kitchen window. Blessings to you, and thank you for reading and commenting.

What a beautiful allegory of our Lord providing Living Water. How our souls thirst for living water each day – He is the only Source we need. God bless you and Nancy today brother David 🙏 🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
