The Sea Cushion: Peace in God’s Presence

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

Psalm 91:1 (NIV)

People who’ve spent time in submarines, under the surface of the ocean, speak of a β€œSea Cushion.” Below a certain depth, the water is relatively smooth –no matter what the wind-driven waves are doing on the surface.

This illustration inspires me to ponder the unshakable peace that can be found in God’s holiest servants. Each of us can probably think of a believer who trusted the Lord and remained faithful to Him through the most perilous circumstances.

Which begs the question: How does one rest in God while the storm rages?

Come to me, all you who are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)

Kind reader, the deeper we go in Christ, the less we’ll be affected by the chaotic motion of the world’s surface waves and wind. May we be able to say, with the Apostle Paul, that our β€œLives are hidden with Christ in God.”—Colossians 3:3

Thank you for reading. πŸ™β€οΈ prayers and love.

Thank you, MIMI KOR. I am sure the idea came from a devotional book I read, but I do not remember which one.

I appreciate your reading and commenting.

This is super timely for me as I read it today – Monday 31st March 2025 because, as a family, we are now exclusively living by faith. There is no financial safety net or paid employment and we will rely – exclusively – on God to provide all our financial needs. He has never failed us before!

Sometimes it feels like our path is an insane or mad one. But, the parting of the red sea was no more mad than the one the Lord has also led us to journey on with Him and the various ministries He has called us to form.

As we get nearer to the date (tomorrow) when there really won’t be enough (without God’s supernatural intervention) it seems as though Jesus becomes, simply, ‘more’.

Just like the picture of the submarine going deeper in the water for smoother seas, it feels like the deeper into the ‘hole’ we go the more Jesus becomes in order to make life more peaceful (or smoother?!?). The deeper we go into the arms of The Father, the less we can see of the journey we are on – we can but trust our Captain to know where we are, where the underwater canyons and mountains are and more.

Hope some of the above makes sense.

God is good and your blog post is superbly timed for me personally!

Thank you, Malcolm. I’m sure you’ll agree that such a life in Christ is easier said than done. Yet the rewards of going deep with God are there. Thank you for reading and sharing. God bless.

I was once a “surface” sailor. Not always calm up there! I do love Colossians 3:3. It is one of a dozen or so verses I make a practice of reciting out loud every morning.

That is really neat, Dave. I never heard of it. (Probably because I have never met a submariner.) I guess it means the deeper our walk, the more of His peace we experience. thanks!

Sea cushion is a new one for me. But fitting illustration of the peace we can experience, the peace Jesus gives, even in life’s storms.

We live in an unshakeable Kingdom! “Don’t you see what we’ve got? An unshakable kingdom! So do you see how thankful we must be? Not only thankful, but brimming with worship, deeply reverent before God.” Heb 12:28-29 MSG What great timing! This is my memory verse for this week!

Thank you, brother Alan. The peace that passes understanding and helps with our anxious thoughts is another great scriptural thought to support the idea of a spiritual sea cushion. God Bless you, as well! πŸ™πŸ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ ΏπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Wow! I really love the illustration of “the sea cushion” regarding our Divine Protector Jesus Christ. There is nothing quite like knowing the Peace beyond our understanding, but accepting it in Him who saves us – Hallelujah! May our Father God continue to guide and bless you David, and Nancy each day πŸ™ πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώ
