Listening for the Right Source

Several of the teachers at my school use their phones as timers throughout the day. When the students are working independently and hear the familiar, “beep-beep- buhbeep” they know it’s time to move on to something else.

However, a tech-savvy first grader recently put a wrinkle in his teacher’s timer procedure. The creative little guy found the same sound as her phone timer on his school issued iPad, and began to play it at random moments during the day.

The teacher was confused, at first, as she knew time wasn’t up for individual seat work. She went over to check her phone, and realized her timer was still running. That’s when she looked around the room and saw the culprit’s sheepish grin.

And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

2 Corinthians 11:14-15 (NIV)

I’m not comparing a seven-year-old to satan–his teacher thought it was comical–but the devil’s trickery is nothing to laugh about. He, and his demon allies, have been substituting forgeries of God’s best for millennia.

So, what’s a child of God to do?

I came across one answer the other day, while visiting a comfortable little nook at our school library. Just above a rolling cart filled with books was a sign that said, “Self Check Out.” Of course, the librarian meant, “Help yourself to these books,” but I was compelled to pause and contemplate my existence.

Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.

2 Corinthians 13:5 (NIV)

Kind reader, every “beep, beep, buhbeep” we hear may not be from God. May we faithfully and prayerfully listen for His legitimate voice—today and everyday.

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

You’re right about the many voices, and the pull of the world can be so subtle! There are enemies of the soul, but, thank God, we have an advocate in Christ!

Our hearts do have to be fine tuned to His voice. Many voices vie for our loyalty and devotion for their own purposes.

True. Many Bible heroes, and present day godly leaders isolated themselves before their downfalls.

Malcolm, your comment brings the realization that I might not even hear the Lord’s timer—if my heart isn’t right with Him. Thank you for sharing an additional application. God Bless!

Thanks, David. That’s helpful. Listening for life’s ‘beep, beep, buhbeep’ is important; it’s also important to identify its source. Both are equally vital.

David, you make a good point in your post and story of the two timers. The enemy of our souls comes near us planting suggestions in our minds. We need to be intimately acquainted with the voice of the Lord so we can test the spirit and know if it is from God. The student had the right sound but the timing was off. Once the wrong thought or suggestion of the Venetia identified, we can cast it down. The classroom illustration shows us how to walk out our walk as a believer. Thank you! ❤️🦻

David, you make a good point. We are to test the spirit to see if it is from God. We need to listen closely and be intimately acquainted with the voice of God so we won’t be fooled by the similar sound of the enemy’s voice.
